Pro-Wrestlers in Deadly Car Accidents

July 4th marks an eerie anniversary of several accidents that killed or severely injured a number of pro-wrestlers over the years.

In 1988, a group of wrestlers driving in Newfoundland and their van went off a bridge and plunged into a creek.  Reports are they were either avoiding or actual struck a moose.  For those unfamiliar with moose, imagine a cow on stilts, colliding with one can be fatal.  The crash killed Adrian Adonis, Dave "Bearman" McKigney and Pat Kelly.  The driver, Mike Kelly, survived.

In 1989, another accident, again involving a moose in the road way caused a non-fatal wreck.  Chris Benoit was hurt, but Jason the Terrible (Karl Moffat) and Davey Boy Smith were seriously injured.  This led to Smith's back problems that led to increasingly severe drug abuse that attributed to his death almost thirteen years later.  Moffat did not return to wrestling for several years.

In 1990, Brutus Beefcake was involved in a parasailing accident that was nearly fatal.  He survived and would return to the ring, but he was never able to reach the level he was at in 1990.

In 1994, the curse struck again when WWF referee Joey Marella fell asleep behind the wheel and crashed.  Marella was killed, but his passenger, manager Harvey Whippleman, survived.

Below is an incomplete list of pro-wrestlers who have died in car accidents.  For a more accurate listing, check out wRESTle in Peace on Scott Teal's 1WrestlingLegends.com website.
