About WPEB

WPEB Community Radio Station
Mission Statement:

"WPEB 88.1 FM is an independent, noncommercial community radio station dedicated to reflecting, representing, incorporating, empowering, and serving West Philadelphia communities by:
  • providing a channel for groups, issues, and music that have been overlooked, suppressed or misrepresented by other media;
  • promoting communication, education, and entertainment through programming that invites interaction between the station and the community;
  • providing training that facilitates creative expression and exploration of public issues with the goal of incorporating and empowering members of the community.
WPEB 88.1 FM is committed to celebrating the unique qualities of the communities of West Philadelphians as well as advancing the points of connection among people."

STRUCTURE: WPEB is a completely volunteer-run radio station. All decisions and tasks are carried out by the station's membership through six different committees: Facilities, Fundraising, Governance, Outreach, Programming, and Technology. Currently, WPEB is entering a pivotal point in its growth, having approved a new Governance Charter in March 2009. Soon the membership will elect a Managing Board, made up of community members from different constituencies throughout West Philadelphia, to help guide the station.  Election information will be announced soon (July 2010), stay tuned.

Feel free to contact the Committee Chairs or to attend a Committee Meeting. Please note that often committees may adjust plans informally, thus it is always better to check with the chairpeople or sign up for email notices.

Radio Activism - Philadelphia City Paper, May 14, 2008

WPEB 88.1FM, West Philadelphia's New FM Community Radio Station, Goes Live On-Air on Saturday, May 17, 2008 - University City District, May 18, 2008

BACKGROUND: In early 2008, Philadelphia saw the rebirth of WPEB 88.1 FM, a community radio station serving West Philadelphia. In its first stage, the new WPEB is being stewarded by Scribe Video Center (2011, they offer Workshops to community). Partnering with Scribe are two West Philadelphia-based organizations in particular, the Philadelphia Independent Media Center (Philly IMC) and the Prometheus Radio Project, and a growing variety of community and cultural groups. WPEB provides a much needed local, progressive, and accountable media outlet to serve as a voice for West Philadelphia’s many communities. The station plans to provide a forum for community based organizations and be a place to discuss the issues that affect us, play music not heard on mainstream media, and promote education and creative substantive expression. 2010, Scribe>WPEB at two years old is now a member of The National Federation of Community Broadcasters. ( 37th Annual NFCB Community Radio Conference, June 13-16, 2012 | Houston, Texas )
