THE REPUBLIC OF PEPLER HOUSE
INSTITUTED ON REPUBLIC DAY, 2 JUNE 2007, TO PROTECT OUR BUILDING
AND SAY NO TO CURRENT PLANS
Republic of Pepler House
Angry residents of Pepler House in the deprived North Kensington Wornington Estate declared a Republic today 2 June 2007, which is Republic Day.
They have declared Independence to make a stand against their housing association, Kensington Housing Trust (KHT), which is determined to bulldoze their entire estate and break up the strong community, against the wishes of the residents and despite a so-called consultation process.
Residents’ Association Chair Keith Stirling was elected President of the Republic of Pepler House, which will exist for 12 months and can be confirmed on Republic Day next year. Vice President is local activist Lesley Dillon. The campaign has the very strong backing of the diverse local community, including Imam Driss Boumzough, who is also a resident of Pepler House.
Local Councillors Pat Mason and Emma Dent Coad fully support the move. Councillor Emma Dent Coad, who is also Minister of Information, said: ‘These people know they are being messed with. KHT has promised them they will be rehoused according to need but this is nonsense as they would be lucky, after a ten year rebuild, to get one of the extra 30 flats proposed. They have been promised so much it’s getting ridiculous – an end to crime and unemployment. What next? World peace? The reality is they will be decanted to a ‘low demand’ (ie, no one wants to live there) area, and will be ‘incentivised’ to settle there. Well, the citizens of The Republic of Pepler House aren’t having it, and hope the rest of the estate will join them in taking control and setting the agenda.’
President Keith Stirling said: ‘One day they say in the press that no decisions have been made about the estate. The next day they write to tenants saying the Board wants full regeneration. Someone isn’t telling us the truth.’
