The brainchild of two Stanford University computer science professors, Coursera has over 4 million users in just over a year. Coursera works with universities to make their courses available online. It collaborates with 83 educational institutions in four continents to offer about 400 college level courses for free online. Coursera also offers course credit to those who take proctored exams at end of the course, for a few.


CourseSites is a free, hosted online course creation and facilitation service that empowers individual K–12 teachers, college and university instructors and community educators to add a web–based component to their courses, or even host an entire course on the Internet. You even choose your own URL, so students can find your page easily.



EdX is a MOOC created by Harvard and MIT. It is non-profit, and aims to bring best quality higher education to students around the world. EdX is collaborative and its platform is open source. Apart from expanding access to education for everyone, it seeks to advance teaching and learning through research.  EdX offers online courses from more than 20 institutions. San Jose State gives high marks to its partnership with edX. According to Inside Higher Ed, students enrolled in classes using edX materials are actually outperforming students in non-edX-supported classes. But while Udacity courses were built to replace the traditional classroom experience, edX courses are meant to supplement them.

FutureLearn is the first UK-led multi-institutional platform, partnering with 17 UK universities, offering MOOC to students around the world. It is a private company owned by the Open University.It is reinventing learning so that you can enjoy free online courses from top universities, whenever and wherever you like.


Khan Academy

What started off as Salman Khan tutoring his cousin in Maths over the internet has grown into The Khan Academy, an educational website that contains over 4000 video lectures covering mathematics, science, history, economics among others. Exercises and peer-to-peer tutoring are available on the site. Its features are used in many schools, a practice that Khan says has flipped the classroom. Students learn at home from the site, the more limited time in the classroom is better used for discussion and giving students personalized attention.

MIT Open Courseware

MIT Open Courseware, MIT OCW is one of the initial movements towards opening the classroom to the world through the world wide web. In 2001, MIT began to put its educational material – reading lists, discussion topics, homework, exam questions, their solutions, lecture notes, and later, audio and video lectures - on the web. It is open, freely available to anyone. In 2005, MIT OCW along with other projects, formed the Open Courseware Consortium, to improve the impact of Open Courseware materials, foster more Open Courseware materials, and develop sustainable models for Open Course material publication.


MRUniversity is focusing on economics courses, founded by two GMU professors.

P2PU (Peer to Peer University) is a non-profit online community based learning platform, founded with funding from the Hewlett Foundation and the Shuttleworth Foundation. Schoo is a Japan’s MOOC provider. Presently, offering more than 130 courses.

The Open Learning Initiative (OLI) is a grant-funded group at Carnegie Mellon University, offering innovative online courses to anyone who wants to learn or teach. Our aim is to create high-quality courses and contribute original research to improve learning and transform higher education.



When Sebastian Thrun and Peter Norvig of Stanford University decided to experiment by offering their course on Artificial Intelligence online to anyone for free, over 160,000 students from more than 190 countries enrolled. This led to the establishment of Udacity, aimed at bringing accessible, affordable, engaging and effective higher education to the world. Udacity has students from 203 countries. Students receive an electronic certificate on completing the course. Students can take a proctored exam for a fee, so they receive recognition from colleges and employees.



Udemy is a website that allows instructors to host courses. It is an online platform that allows individuals - professors, writers, entrepreneurs, subject experts - to build online courses on any topic. They can upload documents, presentations, audio and video files to create courses. Instructors can also have live classes and discussion boards.


UniMOOC is a course created by and for entrepreneurs with the method of the Massive Open Online Courses. The tuition is free and free access to all course content (videos, materials, lessons, tests ...). It joins two concepts "Learning + Enterprise". The "lessons" are taught by successful entrepreneurs in the digital economy who bring their cases and experiences and teachers, researchers and experts in the new economy.
