Religious Tolerance

America was unique in its early history regarding religious tolerance. This was unheard of when our nation was first founded since other nations would not allow it. However, the experiences of the nation as it grew required that religious toleration become a part of our legal system. The law would then guarantee the right of religious toleration to all our citizens. While one was free to believe whatever one wanted, one's actions in light of that belief could be regulated if the state found the act unlawful. The principle for this freedom was taken from the Bible. The Jewish nation allowed people of different faiths to live within their state. However, their actions were governed by God's laws of justice.

The following video clip gives a good historical overview of how this view developed.
