Dominion/Stewardship

The term dominion has gotten a bad reputation. Too often it is coupled with the concept of "domination" rather than its more accurate meaning of stewardship or management. The term was given by God to describe man's duties after God created Adam and Eve.

Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” (Genesis 1: 26)

God gave mankind the job of managing the earth that He created. In the process we are to develop its resources and expand the human race on the earth. This is often referred to as the Dominion or Creation Mandate. The mandate is still current for the human race. With the coming of Jesus Christ, it has been coupled with the Great Commission that Jesus gave to His church prior to returning to the right hand of His Father.

The point is that humans have a purpose for their short time here on planet earth. We are to be faithful to what God has called us to do while we live our our lives. In the process we learn the principles of Godly living and managing of His creation while we live out our lifespan. Being made in the image of God we have great potential for both good or evil. We are given the choice for what we will do with our lives. Choose wisely for we will all give an account to God for what we did with our lives while we lived it out.

Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth. Walk in the ways of your heart and the sight of your eyes. But know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment. (Ecclesiastes 11: 9)
