We started this project by asking why Benito Mussolini was skiing without a shirt in an archival photo. The activity and image are both overtly masculine and we explored how widespread and pervasive the relationship between masculinity and leadership is. Vladimir Putin hunts and horseback rides shirtless. Barack Obama built a basketball course at the White House. Leaders throw the first pitch, don military uniforms, make exercise videos, and hunt. We explore how these activities are made public and why.
