WAFLT Spring Regional February 22, 2014 at PLU

Series of 4 sessions: The Keys to Planning for Learning
Take one or all four of these sessions based on this wonderful new resource from ACTFL by Donna Clementi and Laura Terrill:
http://www.actfl.org/publications/books-and-brochures/the-keys-planning-learning
(Find links to the template and example lessons in French there.)

Session 1: Introducing The Keys to Planning for Learning
The newest ACTFL publication in the Keys series pulls all the pieces together -- the "refreshed" 5 C's of the World Readiness Standards for Learning Languages, the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines (2012) and Performance Descriptors, new NCSSFL-ACTFL Global Can-Do Benchmarks (based on LinguaFolio(R)), plus the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts. The book provides a framework for and examples of effective curriculum, unit, and lesson design, as well as free templates for download from the ACTFL website. Come to this session for a quick overview of this invaluable resource for all language teachers and curriculum developers.

Session 2: The Keys to Planning for Learning: Backwards Design for Unit Planning
Learn how to use the tools and examples in the new Keys book to plan effective thematic units focused on developing language proficiency in students through engaging content and authentic materials and meaningful communicative tasks. This session will share Unit Plan examples from the book as well as examples being developed in language programs in Washington state.

Session 3: The Keys to Planning for Learning: New Mindsets for Lesson Plan Design
Learn how to use the tools and examples in the new Keys book to plan lessons with meaningful, communicative activities and formative assessment in a student-centered classroom. This session will share Lesson Plan examples from the book as well as examples being developed in language programs in Washington state. We'll also talk about creating a repository where Washington language teachers can share great standards-based lesson plans they've developed.

Session 4: The Keys to Planning for Learning: Assessment of and for Learning
Learn how to use the updated assessment tools and guidelines and example rubrics in the new Keys book to build assessment for learning into every lesson and to create authentic, integrated performance assessments for summative assessment of learning. We'll show the connections between the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines (2012) and Performance Descriptors and the new NCSSFL-ACTFL Global Can-Do Benchmarks (based on LinguaFolio(R)) for formative and student self-assessment.
