What is Education Research?

According to International Agency for Standards and Rating Education research is the scientific field of study  that examines education and learning processes and the human attributes, interactions, organizations, and institutions that shape educational outcomes. Scholarship in the field seeks to describe, understand, and explain how learning takes place throughout a person’s life and how formal and informal contexts of education affect all forms of learning. Education research embraces the full spectrum of rigorous methods appropriate to the questions being asked and also drives the development of new tools and methods.

What are the major branches in Educational Research ?

Descriptive Education, Correlational Education and Experimental Education are major types of studies.

What is Descriptive Education ?

Descriptive studies attempt to describe things as they currently are. For example, a teacher might observe a student who is not doing well in his class and keep a record of his daily patterns.

What is Correlational Education ?

Correlational studies attempt to identify a relationship between two or more things. For example, a teacher might observe a student who seems to get up a lot to determine if he gets up at the same time, during the same subject, etc., each day.

What is Experimental Education ?

Experimental studies attempt to demonstrate a causal relationship between two or more things. They typically involve two or more groups (control group and experimental group) that are randomly assigned (people are picked at random to be in each group).

Question: What are your recommendations to improve the standards of journals publishing research articles on Education Research?

Answer: The journals publishing educational research should first ensure that:

i. They are to be online for wider visibility, readability and publicity of various specific and peculiar issues in different societies.

ii. They are indexed, as a requirement for international best practice.

iii. Blog/Experts column/section for discussion on issues treated in the articles for further suggestions, criticisms and update of information should be part of journal websites, even for feedbacks.

iv. There should also be consideration for wider coverage in the editorial team, that is, to be selected from different cultural and geographical backgrounds (countries). This will address the diversities and peculiarities of different authors contributing papers for publication in the journals.

v. Similarly, reviewers must be sourced from the relevant disciplines or areas in which the paper submitted has its scope.

vi. There should also be more specialised journals for different areas of education or focusing on the theory and practice of education.  This will make the journal a more professional forum to discuss educational issues.

vii. Papers without any educational characteristics or inputs should be avoided in any journal already tagged as educational journals.

viii. Multi-disciplinary journals are equally not bad, as long as it is named as such.

Question: What are your recommendations to improve syllabus of Education Research?

Answer: Firstly, educational research syllabus should be more practical than theoretical. Local environment should be the focus when topics are being selected, because the end-product of research should primarily focus on solving problems of the immediate environment and generally in the improvement of the societies.

Mixed approaches that integrate both quantitative and qualitative analysis are advocated. Both qualitative and quantitative elements in educational research are better featured in research. The discipline of education is multi-specialisation. Some specialists in education are found in the Arts or Humanities, Sciences (may be applied) and others in Social Sciences, with different research orientations. These different research orientations are need by educational researchers.

The content of educational research should be such that will recognise this multifariousness in the field of education. Some scientifically/empirically encrypted methods of analysis which are traditional to the people in sciences and social sciences often times leave many in Arts or humanities startled, when it comes to decoding the statistically presented results of findings/analysis.

Question: What are your recommendations to frame guidelines on funding of Education Research?

Answer: In sub-Saharan Africa, individual research studies are not funded. The only area an individual research is funded is through private grants, not by government. If there is any research grant by government, the award is discriminatory. Generally, research studies are mostly commissioned and funded by International Multilateral Organisations, e.g. UNESCO etc. Basically, it has also been realised that corporate bodies only fund researches that are linked to what the industries required, as it is only the industries that are now buying researches at the individual levels now.

On the other hand, corporate bodies have grown over the years to become major sponsors of research, but are impatient with the duration for which the outcome of their investments should begin to manifest. In short, they expect quick results on their investments.

Commissioning, funding and buying researches are potentially beneficial to the funding agency and by extension, the society. Research sponsors (private or public) should not be in a hurry to see the outcome of research they commissioned and funded. There is always durational maturity in every investment.

In view of the above, government, agencies, non-governmental organisations are expected to be proactive and committed to helping the society grow through funding of researches, even as part of their corporate social responsibilities.

More Foundations should be set up and to consider as part of their programmes, budgeting for educational advancement and specifically funding research.

Floating of more grants/scholarships will also help to solve most problems that the individual and the societies encounter.

Question: How can universities produce revolutionary Ph.D and Post Doc thesis and dissertations on Education Research? What are your recommendations to improve the academic standards?

Answer: The management of universities should set up a unit/centre in charge of research and development whose mandate will include sourcing grants for Ph.D candidates in education.

Societal problems should be identified, rather than recycling topics and investigating over-flogged educational manifestations such as examination malpractices, cultism, drug abuse etc which millions of research findings/results already exist. There are issues of contemporary concerns that are staring many countries in the face, these should be explored.

Moral issues are enough to be dealt with in the US, possibly requiring research for solution. Middle East is faced with wars and hostilities, grounding and retarding growth of education. In Nigeria, contemporary issues of farmers-herdsmen attacks, insurgency, flooding, kidnapping, human/child trafficking, religious intolerance, political discords, economic downturn etc as directly or indirectly affecting education; are viable and appealing areas for educational research.

When these issues and not topics are addressed in educational research, the societies will make progress and become better for it.

Research and all that characterises it should be digitalized/automated - screening research topics for elimination of similarity and check for plagiarism or similarity index of the contents.

Procurement of institutional licences for e-books, journals and other research-related softwares that will help graduate researchers surmount the agonies of sourcing for materials, particular to access the existing knowledge about their studies and cushioning the effects of the associated financial worries.

Making available in our universities, Data Centre, archives and educational resource centres which will provide for researcher access to quality information.

Question: How can students seek job and career opportunities in Education Research? What are your recommendations to improve employment and scope in this sector?

Answer: If we understand where we have come to where we are in education, it will be very impressive to address educational issues and problems, particularly crimes, socio-economic, religious, environmental, cultural and so on; with both scientific and theoretical research. When this is the case, government and corporate organisations should set up research and statistics units or departments, recruiting prospective (researchers) educationists that would find solutions

Question: Any other thing, you would like to share?

Answer: Journal hard copies should be de-emphasised, not that the practice is repugnant, but with less emphasis for promotion exercises. For journals to be hosted and accessible online should be the emphasis and not the hardcopies, as it is the case and requirement for assessment and promotion of academics in many institutions. Papers/articles published in any online journals receive wider visibility, citation and referencing, even in terms of currency than those that are only available locally for readers or users only in their immediate localities.
