Exclusive Interview with World Champion 2018 Dr. Daniel Enyinnaya Azunna, The world's most influential Superstar in Earth Science (Mineral Prospecting)

Question: What are your recommendations to improve the standards of journals publishing research articles on Earth Science?

Answer by Dr. Daniel Enyinnaya Azunna:

To improve the standards of journals publishing research articles on earth science, care should be taken to involve seasoned personnel to review any work in order to validate the data and methodology presented. This will help to ensure that the inferred results will not be misleading.

The review process should be effective with less evaluation time while fostering a cordial relationship between authors, reviewers and publishers.

It is also important to publish if possible, articles of the same field in one journal instead of publishing articles of two or more related fields in one journal. This will improve efficiency and specialization.

Question: What are your recommendations to improve syllabus of Earth Science for more creativity, applications and opportunities?

Answer by Dr. Daniel Enyinnaya Azunna:

The syllabus of earth science should be made to be interesting, skill based and entrepreneurial. It should be structured so that students after graduation from any field will be self reliant and productive. Earth science has practical applications in our environment and this can be appreciated only when one is involved in observing the things happening around our environment

To achieve this, field works and software usage should be integrated into the curriculum. Students should be given field based research before graduation.

Question: What is Earth Science? What are the major branches in Earth Science?

Answer by Dr. Daniel Enyinnaya Azunna:

Earth science is the study of the earth, its atmosphere and its oceans in order to characterize its materials, understand the processes that shape it, and to unravel its history. It is also called Geoscience.

Earth science studies the planets physical characteristics, from earthquakes to raindrops, and floods to fossils. It has vast fields and it encompasses four different parts of the earth namely; the lithosphere, the hydrosphere, the atmosphere, and the biosphere, each of which is further broken down into more specialized fields. These four broad branches are linked and they provide us with the natural resources we rely on such as energy resources, water resources, soil resources, minerals, metals, and building resources. The ecological resources, such as forests, coastal systems, and the oceans are also gotten from the earth studies.

The branches of earth science are numerous and some of them are inter-related. Some of the major branches of earth science are highlighted below:

·         Physical Geography: This branch studies the processes and patterns in the natural environment like the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and geosphere as opposed to the cultural or built environment. Other sub-divisions include; geomorphology, soil study, hydrology, meteorology, climatology, and biogeography.

·         Geology: This is a branch of earth science which studies the solid earth, the rocks it is composed of and how they change over time. Major sub disciplines are mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, geomorphology, paleontology, stratigraphy, structural geology, engineering geology, and sedimentology.

·         Geophysics: Geophysics studies the physical properties of the earth and its surrounding space environment using quantitative methods for their analysis. It also investigates the shape of the earth, its reaction to forces and its magnetic and gravity fields. Geophysicists explore the Earth's core and mantle as well as the tectonic and seismic activity of the lithosphere. Geophysics is commonly used to supplement the work of geologists in developing a comprehensive understanding of crustal geology, particularly in mineral and petroleum exploration. Some other sub-fields include; seismology, petrology, hydro geophysics, well logging, electrical prospecting and radiometrics.

·         Atmospheric Science: This studies the earth's atmosphere, its processes, the effects other systems have on the atmosphere, and the effects of the atmosphere on these other systems. Atmospheric science covers the gaseous parts of the Earth (or atmosphere) between the surface and the exosphere. Major sub disciplines include meteorology, climatology, atmospheric chemistry, and atmospheric physics with major interest in weather forecast.

·         Ecology: This covers the interactions between the biota, with their natural environment. This field of study differentiates the study of the Earth, from the study of other planets in the solar system; the earth being the only planet teeming with life.

·         Soil science covers the outermost layer of the Earth's crust that is subject to soil formation processes (or pedosphere). Major subdisciplines include edaphology and pedology.

·         Hydrology, Oceanography and Limnology: These are studies which revolve around the movement, distribution, and quality of the water and it involves all the components of the hydrologic cycle on the earth and its atmosphere (or hydrosphere). Sub-disciplines of hydrology include hydrometeorology, surface water hydrology, hydrogeology, watershed science, forest hydrology, and water chemistry.

·         Glaciology covers the icy parts of the Earth (or cryosphere).

Question: What are your recommendations to frame guidelines on funding of research projects on Earth Science?

Answer by Dr. Daniel Enyinnaya Azunna:

Faculty staff and students from any institution who has scholarly research project that is field based and experimental in nature should be encouraged with a grant since such form of research is financially tasking and time consuming. Such grants should be for innovative and instructional projects aimed at advancing the course of knowledge.

The research proposal should be evaluated based on merit and without bias by seasoned personnel with the aim of; identifying persons with collaborative research opportunities, establishing a sound basis for the pursuit of external grant opportunities, and  identifying  its lead to publications or other scholarly products.

Furthermore, developing countries of the world should be given more priority in disbursing grants. This will encourage learning and research in such countries and as well foster development. Beneficiaries of a grant should be monitored progressively in the course of the research while proper report should be made after the completion of the research.

Question: How can universities produce revolutionary PhD and Post Doc thesis and dissertations on Earth Science? What are your recommendations to improve the academic standards in Earth Science?

Answer by Dr. Daniel Enyinnaya Azunna:

For universities to produce such revolutionary thesis and dissertations, they should ensure that the PhD student or Post Doctoral scholar is embarking on an original research that is meant to make impacts to the area of specialisation. The results and inference obtained from such dissertation should be such that it guides the understanding of would be researchers.

To achieve this, a supervisory committee made of much senior experts in the area should be established by the institution to ascertain the novelty of the research proposal and as well monitor the methodology and progress of the dissertation. These supervisors should serve as mentors to the students.

Since funding is a major challenge to research, grants and incentives should be given to students by their institutions to encourage them embark on ground breaking researches.  Furthermore, awards can be given through a meritorious competition to those with outstanding research outcomes in various fields of earth science.

Question: How can students seek job and career opportunities in Earth Science?

Answer by Dr. Daniel Enyinnaya Azunna:

A student desiring to build a career in any branch of earth science should first of all determine his passion and desire. He should know what he is good at and develop the necessary skill that will drive his passion.

Thereafter, he should know the employment regulation of his country which determines his suitability and eligibility to practice as an earth scientist. He can then look for talent-friendly employers. These employers and other career opportunities can be seen in various media especially the internet and newspaper adverts.

Students can also visit earth science research institutes or industries in their area and apply to work as interns. From there, one can grow in his career. It is also vital to have a network of other students and professionals from the same area of interest. This will improve one’s chances of getting a desired job.

Question: What job titles are available in Earth Science?

Answer by Dr. Daniel Enyinnaya Azunna:

Specialists in earth sciences can fit well in different roles in the academia and across a range of industries. Career in academia include; public school teacher, community college instructor, postdoctoral researcher or a university professor within the various fields of earth sciences around the world.

In the industry, an earth scientists can work in; oil and gas, mining, risk management, financial services and other computational and modeling firms. They can take up roles as exploration geologist, geophysicist, engineering and environmental geologist, petroleum engineer, environmental manager, mining engineer, etc.

In the government and third sector agencies, earth scientists can fit well in environmental, diplomatic, advisory and consultancy roles. They can also work in earth science related research institutes like NASA, U.S geological Survey Agency, etc.

Question: What are your recommendations to improve employment and scope in Earth Science?

Answer by Dr. Daniel Enyinnaya Azunna:

Government should look into mineral prospecting and the natural environment in order to harness the hidden potentials. This can be done by establishing more industries and research institutes to look into potentials which abound in the earth. This will provide employment for earth scientists.

Favourable Policies should also be put into place to encourage mining activities. This will also promote job opportunities for earth scientists in the mining sector. Meteorological centres should also be established in different places (especially airports and seaports) to enable meteorologists give reliable weather forecast. This will in turn improve the economic activities in the said area.

Question: What is Mineral prospecting and what is its significance?

Answer by Dr. Daniel Enyinnaya Azunna:

Mineral prospecting is the physical search for minerals, precious metals or mineral specimens in an area. Mineral prospecting precedes its exploration or mining. Once a mineral ore is identified in an area and its commercial viability ascertained, then it will be explored for economic and cultural purposes.

Prospecting is physical labour, involving traversing on the land, air or on the sea. It also involves sifting and outcrop investigation, looking for signs of mineralization. Mineral prospecting is very significant in the economic growth of the area where a mineral is found.

Most minerals are not found ordinarily on the outcrop nor can it be observed without a thorough knowledge of its properties. Therefore, mineralogists play vital roles in the identification and harnessing of minerals. These minerals serve as raw materials for industries; some are used as ornaments and some for cultural purposes. Therefore, mineral prospecting helps to improve the socio-economic growth of a nation.

Question: What are methods for mineral prospecting?

Answer by Dr. Daniel Enyinnaya Azunna:

The method employed in mineral prospecting depends on the mineral under investigation. However mineral prospecting can take a geochemical approach or a geophysical approach.

Geochemical prospecting is based on systematic measurement of one or more of the chemical properties of rock, soil, glacial debris, stream sediment, water, or plants. The chemical property most commonly measured is the content of a key trace element. The purpose is to discover zones in the soils or rocks that contain comparatively high concentrations of particular elements that will guide the prospector to a hidden deposit. Such concentrations of indicator elements in rocks or soils constitute a geochemical anomaly. The wet chemical method and the instrument technique are methods to employ in geochemical mineral prospecting.

Geophysical mineral prospecting combines the sciences of physics and geology to locate ore deposits. Familiar examples of geophysical prospecting include the use of Geiger counters for detecting radioactive uranium deposits and magnetic surveys to find iron deposits. Five major geophysical methods can be employed in mineral prospecting. They include; magnetic, gravimetric, electrical, radiometric, and seismic methods. They have been successfully utilized in mineral exploration. Some of these methods require complex and costly instruments and highly trained operators. Others, however, are relatively simple and inexpensive. Among these are the magnetic and radiometric methods.
