HALF A SIXPENCE was a brilliantly successful film starring Tommy Steele. The story is set in the English seaside town of Folkestone around 1900.
At the centre of the story is the lovable young cockney, Arthur Kipps, orphaned and penniless, he is an apprentice draper at the emporium of the economy-minded Mr Shalford. Kipps and his childhood sweetheart, Ann pledge their love for each other by each taking half of the same sixpence as a token of their love.
Almost by chance, Kipps learns from a customer, Chitterlow an actor and play write that he has inherited a large fortune, and invests in Chitterlow's play. Also very soon after he falls in love with the charms of the educated and cultured Helen. Ann is devastated, but Kipps soon realises his mistake and marries Ann.
However he wants the best for Ann and misguidedly starts to build a large mansion for her, something she really does not want and this causes friction between them, but as in all good musicals all comes right in the end.
This show is full of great music, characters and fabulous dance routines
