Women in Computing

There is little to dispute the fact that our lives today are immersed in computer technology – in education, careers, communication, information, recreation and socialization.  Not enough attention has been paid to the vast contribution that women have made to the computer revolution.  It is a well-established fact that women in all areas have had to work harder to succeed and be recognized for their accomplishments and nowhere is this phenomenon more blatantly obvious than in the male-dominated fields of science and technology.  Although women have made great strides in recent years, they are often viewed as ancillary to the major achievements in technology.

This website is a partial anthology highlighting the accomplishments of women in computing with particular emphasis on women whose contributions have improved the lives of others in such areas as health, education, communication, safety, and others.  It includes not only famous women who have paved the way for others but lesser known women whose contributions have not been as widely publicized.  Several contemporary women were interviewed to investigate how their work was influenced by their education, their family life and other factors that played a role in their achievements. These short oral histories revealed several commonalities among these women that may have played a role in their success.  You will be able to read a summary of their interviews and hear what they have to say about their work and what it means to them. Their stories present a personal perspective that should serve as an inspiration to women of all ages to follow in their footsteps in creating a better future for the generations to come.

The author would like to express her deepest gratitude to the women who took the time from their very busy lives to be interviewed for this website and to review the content.  They represent women at various stages in their careers -- those whose accomplishments are numerous and outstanding as well as those who are just starting their promising careers.  I have been deeply touched by their dedication and commitment to society.  I thank each of them and wish them continued success.
