2018-2020 GFWC Florida President's Project: Smiles Accross the Miles: Operation Smile
GFWC’s emblem depicts a circular band signifying eternity. In the center of the circular band, the crusader's shield emerges from a darkened world (represented by the field of darkness), which represents enlightenment. The enameled colors—red, white, and blue—are the colors of the United States of America. The red implies courage, the white equals purity, and the blue stands for constancy.
GFWC Florida is excited to join with partner Operation Smile for the 2018-2020 administration.
GFWC Florida President Sharon Oliphant has chosen “Smiles Across the Miles” as her theme for the next two years. During this time a fundraising goal of $250,000 has been set. In order to accomplish this goal, GFWC Florida clubs will be asked to assist with awareness and projects to share Operation Smile. A surgery cost of $240.00—and with that, a cleft palate or lip can be repaired with no cost to the recipient or family.
A GFWC Florida sponsored mission trip with a few lucky participants will be organized for the 2020 year.
2018-2020 GFWC Florida Junior Clubs Director's Project: Book Heroes
Strong literacy skills and a love of reading help prepare children for further education and make them lifelong learners. Children who have access to books at home and who are read to at home consistently test better in all academic areas, and children from low income homes are at a distinct disadvantage that only increases with age. Our focus will be to donate books to children who might not otherwise have them at home. We will be Book Heroes to these children!
The goal is to donate 10,000 books to children in Florida each year, for a total of 20,000 books by May 2020. GFWC Florida clubs are already doing many creative projects which donate books. Book Heroes will expand these efforts by giving clubs new project ideas and quantify donations through the use of preprinted labels that can be put in every book that is donated.
