Red Was the Blood

by Luke Thompson

Red was the blood that poured out from
One sacrifice that paid the sum
For every sin that was or will be
'Til the sacrificed lamb returns for me.
Fallen he seemed and dead and gone,
But hidden behind death the war was won.
Fallen, the Foe still calls guilty
But nothing he can do since Christ paid for me.

Red was the blood that stained the ground
In the courtyard where guards had bound
Infinite God, yet humbled and torn,
As an innocent man to bear my scorn.
Broken he seemed, and suffering long,
But hidden behind pain God's will was done.
Broken the Foe still strives for me,
But stricken, my Christ falls so I can stand free.

Red was the blood of saints when shed
In the name of their Lord and head,
Fighting the fight that eyes cannot find
But in faith, fights for souls so lost and blind.
Singing they bear the cross, the pain,
But hidden in weakness Christ bears the strain.
Singing I cry, "Christ's blood! I'm free!
In dying I live for my Christ died for me."
