He Who Feeds the Ravens

lyrics by William Cowper | arranged by Josh White

Sometimes a light surprises the Christian while he sings
From the Lord who rises with healing in his wings;
When comforts are declining, he grants the soul again
A new season of clear shining to cheer it after rain.

In holy contemplation we sweetly then pursue
Themes of God's salvation and find it ever new;
Set free from present sorrow we cheerfully can say
We will let the dark tomorrow bring with it what it may.

It will bring with it nothing
And he will bear us through.
He who gives the lilies clothing
Will clothe his people, too.
Beneath the spreading heavens
By God all things are fed
And he who feeds the ravens
Will give his children bread.

Though vine nor fig tree neither their wonted fruit shall bear,
All the fields should wither, nor flocks nor herds be there:
Yet God, the same, abiding, his peace shall tune my voice
If in him I am confiding I can't help but rejoice.

It can leave me with nothing
And he will bear me through.
He who gives the lilies clothing
Will clothe his child, too.
Beneath the spreading heavens
By God all things are fed
And he who feeds the ravens
Will give his children bread.
