Craziness of Blood Sacrifice

Let's talk about blood sacrifice and atonement in the Holy Bible and in Christianity in general. In the Old Testament it was commonplace for those individuals following the God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob, to offer up blood sacrifices to atone for their 'sins' (sins basically being the crappy things they had done in their lives).

The book of Leviticus in the
Old Testame
nt gives very explicit (and lengthy) instructions of how and why the blood sacrifices were to be given. Leviticus 1:5 says, "And he shall kill the bullock before the LORD: and the priests, Aaron's sons, shall bring the blood, and sprinkle the blood round about upon the altar that is by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation."

This was supposed to be a sacrifice of a burnt offering
(Leviticus 1:2-4). Leviticus 4:4,8,10,14; 8:14; 9:4,18 are only a few of the verses that discuss utilizing the bullock for a burnt offering, sin offering, or atonement offering.

Bullocks are not the only animals to be so hideously used. Lambs and goats are favorites as well. Leviticus 1:10 says, "And if his offering be of the flocks, namely, of the sheep, or of the goats, for a burnt sacrifice; he shall bring it a male without blemish."

Oh, does this not sound like a grand way to apply for forgiveness? Spill a little blood, eh? Leviticus 3:7-8 says, "If he offer a lamb for his offering, then he shall offer it before the LORD. (8)And he shall lay h is hand upon the head of his offering, and kill it before the tabernacle of the congregation: and Aaron's sons shall sprinkle the blood thereof round about upon the altar." Now, does this sound just a tad violent, you think?

Now, I think animals rights activists would have had a helluva lot to complain about back when it was considered sheik to chop up some poor mammal in hopes sin would be forgiven.

What about our previously mentioned goat animal pals? Leviticus 3:12-13 says, "And if his offering be a goat, then he shall offer it before the LORD. (13)And he shall lay his h
ands upon the head of it, and kill it before the tabernacle of the congregation: and the sons of Aaron shall sprinkle the blood thereof upon the altar round about."

Leviticus 16:15-16 says, "Then he shall kill the goat of the sin
offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the vail, and do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat: (16) And he shall make an atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness of the Children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins..."

These are not the only verses that have to do with butchering goats, but I think we should move on to what instructions are given when dealing with utilizing pigeons or turtle doves for sacrifices.

Leviticus 1:14-15 says, "And if his burnt sacrifice for his offering to the LORD be of fowls, then he shall bring his offering of turtledoves or of young pigeons. (15) And the priest shall bring it unto the altar, and wring off his head, and burn it on the altar, and the blood thereof shall be wrung out at the side of the altar."

And, of course, there are loads and loads of verses just like these ones that give this same instruction of twisting off the heads of these birds in order that they be sacrificed for something that people have done. Stupid, stupid, stupid. So, these innocent animals are paying the price for the sinning humans? How fu*$ up is that?!
