Winneshiek County Democrats Convention 2014
The Winneshiek County Democrats met at their biennial convention on Saturday, March 8, 2014 to discuss issues of local, state, and national importance. The resulting platform covered agricultural, environmental, economic, and governmental issues as well as health care and international affairs.
Included in the formally adopted platform were support for programs to protect soil and water resources, programs to strengthen sustainable agriculture, and programs that make it feasible for beginning and small farmers to adapt to the shifting of agricultural land ownership. Strong support for “protections to health, the local environment, and the local economy as they relate to ‘fracing’ and ‘frac sand’ mining” was a statement of the official platform.
Elected delegates also supported statements to reduce dependence on fossil and carbon-emitting energy sources by implementing solar, wind, wave, and geothermal energy systems together with the distribution systems needed to make them viable.
“These statements fit well with the efforts already in place in the area,” noted Georgie Klevar, co-chair of the local Democratic organization.
Dealing with economic concerns, the assembly also affirmed the need to address the looming Student Loan Debt crisis, maintaining Social Security and Medicare benefits, assisting veterans, and economic equity for women.
“It was good to hear candidates and representatives of candidates for local, state, and national offices speak to these issues as well,” stated Klevar.
Establishing equitable access to free speech, public financing of elections, and prioritizing human and infrastructure needs over weapons of war were included in the extensive platform document. Parts of this document will be combined with other county platforms and further debated and voted on at the First District Democratic Convention held on Saturday, April 26 in Vinton. Winneshiek County residents representing the Democrats will be Joyce Becker, Deborah Bishop, Steven Hein, Georgie Klevar, Becky Olafsen, and Peter Olafsen. The Democrats State Convention will be held Saturday, June 21 in Des Moines.
“Local people discussing issues that affect Winneshiek County is democracy at its best,” said Pat Brockett, co-chair of the Winneshiek County Democrats.
