France_Burgundy_Cote de Nuits_Flagey-Echezeaux

When people think of this town in the Cotes de Nuits, they think it is called Echezeaux because the village and 1er Cru wines are sold under the Vosne-Romanee name for more prestige and more added value to the bottom line. Still though this is a village, unique in that most of the land is Grand Cru with Echezeaux and Grands Echezeaux being the big two in Flagey. Out of all the Grand Crus Echezeaux has maybe the highest variable quality with its highs (Domaine de la Romanee Conti, Henri Jayer) and lows (Francois Lamarche, Antonin Rodet).

There are a total of 11 unique climates within the Echezeaux and some are not as good as others. Many people say Echezeaux should be chopped up and some demoted to 1er Cru status. There is always talk of upgrading and downgrading in Burgundy but this has been going on for a while.  But a great Echezeaux has a dynamic interplay of explosive tiny red berry fruit, exotic spice, bouncy acidity and lovely ripe structure. The quality comes from the depth of soil which is very deep within the whole vineyard. Grands Echezeaux is not just the volume turned up on the Echezeaux, but there is also more detail, a more imposing structure and usually a bigger price. Its location is on the western side of the Grand Cru in Morey-St.-Denis, Clos de Vougeot. The consistency here across the board is much better than Echezeaux and certain bottlings by Domaine de la Romanee Conti (DRC) and Rene Engel can be downright heartbreakingly beautiful wines.

This area is just north of the great Vosne-Romanee and shares many of the same qualities with its neighbor up north except being a tad less fine and a bit less rich but again that mostly goes out the window in the hands of a great producer. Many peole consider this area part of Vosne-Romanee in everything but name. Prices are pretty consistent with the entry fee for Echezeaux being around $85 and going to around $400 for top stuff like DRC. Henri Jayer is an exception as there is a cult around his wines and the Echezeaux goes from $1,300-$4,000 and more for recent and older vintages. Pricing gets even sillier on larger format wines.
