Fermenters -- Day 6
Day 6

1. Kefir grains in apple juice
I put this in a soda pop bottle along with sugar syrup and water. It is still fermenting.and carbonating. The bottle is beginning to feel harder from the carbonation and it may be ready to refrigerate and drink soon.

2. Raisins and apple peels
Continuing to ferment and carbonate in plastic bottle.

3. Kahm-covered oak leaves
Continuing to ferment in plastic bottle. The bottle is becoming hard to squeeze. May be ready to refrigerate and drink soon.

4. Potato water
Still nothing, and it has an odd smell about it. Now I'm beginning to remember how my so-called potato water wasn't entirely potato water and had other vegetables cooked in it, too, and was in a pot made of metal of an unknown provenance, not baked enamel as I normally use. I think I may make another potato water medium to see if works any better.

5. Kvass
I didn't open the bottle again to check for a pop, but it shows no further signs of being carbonated by the squeeze test.

7. Peaches

Transferred to plastic bottle, continuing to ferment and carbonate.

8. Moldy hay
I transferred some of the liquid to a plastic bottle with more water and sugar, using it as an inoculant rather than continuing to ferment the entire thing. I'm going to have to taste test this at some time and I want to dilute the cow/barn aroma as much as possible. Otherwise, it is continuing to ferment and carbonate.

9. Dandelions
Liquid is starting to take on color from the flowers and looks cloudy and has a nice smell, but no sign of fermentation. I didn't expect any: I just added the dandelions for fun.

10. Dirt

I decided to try making a yeast starter out of dirt. Nothing special, just decent ordinary dirt. Added water and sugar to it, just like all the others.
