Boys Lacrosse Coach Richard Kaetzel has joined the Windermere team!
Richard Kaetzel, or “Coach K” as his players call him, has been coaching lacrosse for over a decade. As a player, he helped start the first club lacrosse team in his hometown of Lexington, Kentucky the “Lexington Eagles” and was also a player on the inaugural team at his High School, Paul Laurence Dunbar. He continued his playing career at the College of Mount Saint Vincent in Riverdale, New York playing for one season as a starting attackman. He then transferred to the University of Kentucky and played one year of NCLL club lacrosse.
After his season playing for the University of Kentucky, he went back to Paul Laurence Dunbar to become an assistant Coach. Quickly rising through the ranks, he was given the job of Head Lacrosse coach for Beaumont Middle School, the feeder program to Paul Laurence Dunbar. In 2010, he returned to Paul Laurence Dunbar to work as an assistant again, and continued working with the players he had coached through middle school.
Wanting a change of scenery and new challenges, Coach Kaetzel accepted the Head Boys Lacrosse coaching position at Ocoee High School in 2011. At the time Coach Kaetzel arrived at Ocoee, their team had only one winning season since their founding five years before. Coach Kaetzel quickly worked to bring Ocoee’s program to prominence. After a difficult first season, where he focused mainly on changing attitudes and expectations, he followed up with three winning seasons between 2012-2014, including two district runner-ups.
Over his career, Coach Kaetzel has made a reputation for building new programs, creating winning atmospheres, and as a 2015 West Orange Times article put it “Kaetzel and his staff have made a reputation for developing players.” In 2017, Coach Kaetzel was named the Head Boys Lacrosse coach at Windermere High School, where he hopes to continue to strengthen the abilities of his players and bring the same winning attitudes and team building atmosphere that he has implemented in each of his last coaching positions.
Richard Kaetzel lives in the Orlando Area with his wife Lindsey. He has been a teacher at Ocoee High School for the past five years and will begin teaching US History at Windermere high School for the 2017-18 school year.
