Williamses of Pennsylvania, Indiana, & Ohio

Descendants of George S. Williams

Author: Mike Sweet

Generation 1

1. GEORGE S.1 WILLIAMS was born about 1816 in PA1. He married (1) Hannah Pryor on September 26, 1844 in Ripley County, IN2. She was born about 1826 in OH3. He married (2) Mary Unknown about 18584, 5. She was born about 1839 in Germany6.

More About George S. Williams:

Residence: Bet. 1850-1880 in Jackson Township, Dearborn County, IN7, 8, 9, 10

Occupation: Bet. 1860-1880; Tanner & Courier11, 12, 13

Notes for George S. Williams:

The only information recovered on George's lineage is that his father was born in PA and mother was born in Wurttemberg, Germany (1880 census). However, the Williams name has an English ethnic origin.

The 1850 census reported George S. married to Hannah and having one son, George Albert (b 1848). The 1860 census reported George S. married to Mary and having two sons, Albert (b. 1848) and Addison (b. 1850). The 1870 census list George S. with no wife and two children, George & Addison. The 1880 census reports George as widowed and having three children, Albert (b. 1848), Mary (b.1854), Hannah (b. 1856); Addison had died in 1878. Since the girls were not living with George S. and Mary in 1860, it is likely they were living with their divorced mother, Hannah. Also, since Mary was not living with George S. in 1880, it can be assumed that she had either died or divorced him.

Notes for Hannah Pryor:

Hannah's birthplace is uncertain. George Albert William's, her son, death certificate and his 1910 census report it as Holland. The 1900 census reports it as New Jersey. The 1850 & 1930 censuses report it as Ohio. And the 1880 census reports her children's mother's birthplace as England. Part of the confusion might be between the birthplaces of George S. Williams's two wives.

George S. Williams and Hannah Pryor had the following children:

i. GEORGE ALBERT2 WILLIAMS was born on September 10, 1848 in Lawrenceville, Dearborn County, IN14, 15. He died on March 12, 1920 in Orrville, Wayne County, OH16, 17. Notes for George Albert Williams:

George tried several times to enlist in the Civil War Union Army in his young teens. But, after the Army found him to be underage, he was discharged. Finally, towards the end of the war he re-enlisted at age 16 and saw active duty. The 1910 census reports him as a Civil War Union Army veteran. Also, George and Mary (as his widow) received a Civil War Pension.

Family members report that George had a severe case of asthma. This prompted him to relocate a lot in attempts to find a better environment for his illness. Census records and his children's birth records indicate that the family moved back and forth between OH, IN, and FL.

The 1910 and 1920 census has George's wife name listed as Mary A and the 1900 listed it as Annie. However, death certificates of her children, Edna and Charlie, lists her name as Georgia Ann. Georgia may have been a nickname.

The 1910 census lists Mary's parents as being born in NC.
