Smith's Crossing

Last Updated: 14 Jun, 2009
Distance: 50.2 km
Conditions: Easy, mostly flat riding.
Riding Time: 2 - 3 hours
Bikely Route: Bundaberg - Smith's Crossing Loop

Riding to Smith's Crossing takes me back to my childhood as I lived in Oakwood for many of my younger years.  Much of the area has changed from Sugar Cane fields to Macadamia Nut farms, though much is still the same.  The route passes my old school, Oakwood Primary School, which has stood the test of time, some buildings have been added and the Soccer field has moved.  Some fond but distant memories, the most notable of the Principle at the time, Mr Ryan and one of the teachers Mr Thompson as well the many friends now lost over time.

I always remember the crossing as being a cool refreshing place, and it still is - a credit to those who maintain it.  Large lawn areas with plenty of shade and some short walks to take in the natural beauty of the bush surrounds and the river views.

The road into and out of the crossing are also a highlight of the ride.  They are very peaceful back roads surrounded by great Australian bush and rural settings, with many birds and other wildlife lurking close at hand.  Ride these sections at a leisurely pace and recharge your inner soul.
