Events and Announcements

WIA/LA is always up to something. We plan three General Meetings every year on
subjects of interest to the membership.

We also have several active special-interest groups for members who want to improve their skills in writing, voice-over or storyboard. Their meetings and activities will be listed here.

If you're interested in becoming more involved with creating events for the chapter, we invite you to join the Programming Committee.

What Happens After "Yes"? Find Out At June 27th Meeting

posted May 22, 2013, 9:19 PM by Linda Miller

Last year's highly successful panel, "Who Says Yes? And Why?" took us through the pitching process of studios and discussed the many new ways of getting your work seen.

This panel will cover what happens after the studio or network says "We want your show".

We'll discuss the legal and business issues of the actual deal, the development process from this point forward (What? You thought you were done developing it when you sold it?) and how much (or how little) you can expect to be involved with or in charge of the series.

Panelists will include creators, producers, executives and attorneys. At this date, they include:
Craig Miller (Moderator)
Writer, Producer
Audrey Diehl
Executive Director of Development,
Nickelodeon
Brian Hohlfeld
Supervising Producer, Hasbro Studios
If you want to take your dream to the next stage, don't miss this meeting!

Maybe you like to play with your voice. Maybe you have a passion for acting but maybe you don't look like anyone from the ranks of the Hollywood android community.

You've discovered the universe of vocal acting - you can transcend the constraints of time, space, gender, age and species. In the booth, you can be anyone or anything.

If you're looking for a place to expand your skills and make connections, WIA/LA has the place for you at our February General Meeting:

"Finding Your Voice: An Introduction To The Voice-Over Group"

A panel of some of this town's most talented voice actors and directors will give you the benefit of their experience to help you improve your performance and technical skills. You'll meet and work with other members of our active voice community, and above all, have a great time.

WIA/LA Joins Community To Help Out Rusty Mills

posted Nov 30, 2012, 4:48 PM by Linda Miller   [ updated Nov 30, 2012, 4:52 PM ]

As some of you may know, animator and teacher Rusty Mills, a longtime friend of Women In Animation, was diagnosed with colon cancer last year. He had no symptoms, so it came as a dreadful surprise that the disease had already spread to his liver.
Rusty has been fighting this cancer with the most positive attitude that I've ever seen. He is a passionate animator and loves to teach. Rusty was even teaching while receiving chemotherapy.
Rusty's wife, Andrea, and Evan, their 15-year-old son, have been taking care of Rusty. However, things have gotten very tough lately, and they need our help! Rusty has just started a new kind of chemotherapy and the medical bills are accumulating rapidly. Rusty is not able to work right now and he was the main source of income for his family. Andrea is now caring for Rusty full time. Together this family is strong, but it's also been very tough financially and emotionally.

If you would like to contribute any amount, please go to this address: http://www.youcaring.com/medical-fundraiser/Rusty-Mills-Cancer-Fund/35172 and make a contribution. All funds will go directly to the Mills family to help them pay for Rusty's Cancer treatment, groceries and utilities. Prayers are also requested for the Mills family.

With much gratitude and love,
Women In Animation, The Los Angeles Chapter

Creators Tell Their Stories at October 25th General Meeting

posted Oct 3, 2012, 5:27 PM by Linda Miller   [ updated Oct 3, 2012, 5:32 PM ]

It starts with a dream.
Someone's dream.
Someone's beautiful, stupid dream.

Dreamers are determined. They pitch their dreams to a million jaded executives, they work like stevadores until someone says 'yes'. What's surprising is how often the dreamer (who's usually in the credits as Executive Producer) doesn't check to see if his dream will actually make a decent movie or TV show (sometimes those jaded executives have their own dreams). Dreams need reality checks, and that's why we have Storyboard Pitch Nite. This group meets every month to pitch their works-in-progress to each other and to experienced professionals who can help turn a dream into a real show.

If you have the guts to see if your dream will work with an audience, blow the cobwebs off it and and bring it to WIA/LA's next General Meeting:

"TELL ME A STORY: AN INTRODUCTION TO STORYBOARD PITCH NITE"

Our very active Special Interest Group will put a selection of projects before your very eyes, as well as the eyes of a panel of experienced professionals. Anyone who wants to road-test that Great Idea can't miss this meeting.

Join us on Thursday, October 25th
At The Animation Guild (11O5 N. Hollywood Way Burbank, California, USA) Schmoozing and networking begins at 6:30 PM and the meeting proper starts at 7:00. Food and soft drinks will be available.
