Whitkirk Bells – if you hear bells coming from Whitkirk Church please be aware that these are an electronic recording and not the actual bells which hang in the tower. Wedding couples sometimes ask whether we have bells at St. Mary's.    The answer, in the conventional sense is no (the bells are there but are not in a safe state to be rung). However thanks to modern technology, the sound of bells can be heard, as they were for one of our weddings last year.    Looking to the future we thought this would be something we could offer all couples, as well as being heard before our services.    So with the Queen's 90th Birthday Celebrations as the catalyst, we have temporarily installed loudspeakers in the belfry which project the sound of ringing bells as and when required with the touch of the button.   We hope this may be a permanent addition to the sounds of Whitkirk but await the proper permissions.

St Mary's Church, Whitkirk is an attractive grade 1 listed building in East Leeds.  It is a prominent landmark and is usually floodlit at night.

The engineer John Smeaton, who built the third Eddystone lighthouse in 1759 is buried just behind the main altar

Vicars can be traced back to AD 1185, but there was probably a church before that.

The present building is predominantly from the 14th and 15th centuries, with later additions and alterations.

Today it is the home of a vibrant church community and is well used by all sections of people from the locality.  It is part of the Church of England Diocese of Leeds.
