About HOD of Music

My name is Nick Grew, I'm the Head of Music at Whangarei Girls' High School. I moved over from the U.K. in June 2012 with my wife and daughter and soon found myself in the priveleged but challenging position of teaching music and building up the Music Department at Whangarei Girls' High School.

I have over 20 years' experience as a music teacher and educator, working in a variety of settings including primary, secondary, special needs and as a university lecturer of music composition and music education. Music has always been at the core of my professional work as a teacher, facilitator, composer and performer. I play the piano (but only rusty pianos now!). In addition to being a teacher I am a composer and performer. I have been commissioned to compose music for the Ten Tors Orchestra in Plymouth, UK as well as the Whangarei Choral Society and Northland Sinfonia. As an electronic music performer, I have performed extensively in the UK, New York, Toronto, Berlin, Eastern Europe and New Zealand. I have worked as a sound and lighting designer and technician in Berlin's English Theatre and performed as an actor at the Dublin and New York Fringe Festivals.

This is an exciting time both for myself and Whangarei Girls' High School. The Music Department has gone through some significant changes recently, including more opportunities for students to perform, compose and collaborate across the school and the launch of our school radio station WGHR 87.8 FM. The department has also grown significantly so that we have now employed an additional music teacher, Natalie Peyton. Last yearwe received over $20,000 from Pub Charities to purchase more instruments so that our students can continue to experience high quality music-making in this thriving department. We hope to continue to support and be a part of the exciting and emerging creative culture of our school.
