HOT DAYS AHEAD AT WALNUT GROVE

This hot weather came on quick!  We are already seeing an increase in headaches  and over-heating.  Dehydration can cause or worsen both. Please remind your children to drink plenty of water even when it is just warm .

PUSD

Dear Parent/Guardian,

    As you may know, K-12 assessments are changing.  We want to keep you informed about the different assessments your child may be taking this  spring.

    PUSD, along with thousands of school districts across California, are participating in a field test of a modern assessment system, known as the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) that will replace the Standardized Testing and Reporting System (STAR) program.

    The new test is called the Smarter Balanced Assessment and is aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English and math, which California adopted in 2010. The CCSS are a group of nationally recognized standards that describe what knowledge and skills students need to be well prepared for college and careers, no matter where they come from or where they live.

    Because we are in a transition year, we will have some paper-based tests along with a field test of the new computer-based tests. On the back of this letter you will find a general assessment overview.  School districts are administering two types of tests in 2014:

Computer-based Smarter Balanced Field Tests:

·         English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA) and Mathematics-grades 3-8 and 11. The purpose is to:

    • "Test the test"
    • Evaluate testing software & technology
    • Evaluate effectiveness of tests administration & training materials
    • Establish scoring and reporting levels
    • Familiarize students, educators and administrators with online testing

Paper-based tests:

·         California Standards Tests (CSTs) for Science-grades 5, 8, and 10

·         California Modified Assessment (CMA) for Science-grades 5, 8, and 10 who meet the eligibility requirements to take this instead of a CST for Science

·         California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA) for Science-grades 5, 8, and 10 who meet the CAPA requirements

·         CAPA for ELA and Mathematics-grades 2-11 who meet the CAPA requirements

·         CSTs for students in grade 11 participating in the Early Assessment Program

Only grades 3-8 & 11 will test moving forward, except for CAPA which tests students with severe disabilities in grades 2-11.  The CA High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE), SAT/ACT/PSAT, and AP testing are not affected by these changes.

If you want to see what types of questions students will be asked on the SBAC Field Test or how the test will be presented, a practice test is available online at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sa/practicetest.asp.

If you would like more information, please visit the California Department of Education Smarter Balanced Web page athttp://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sa/smarterfieldtest.asp. If you have any questions regarding your child's participation, please contact your school site.

Sincerely,

Parvin Ahmadi
Superintendent

From Superintendent Parvin Ahmadi

 I Challenge you!!

In 30days, the second annual PPIE Pleasanton Run for Education will start at the Alameda County Fairgrounds and run through this beautiful city of ours.

I offer up a request and a challenge.  Let's raise the awareness of this run and increase our participation even more so than the 1,800 runners we had last year.   My challenge to each of you is to get the word out and get people registered.  The school who has the highest participation rate (as a percentage of students) will be given the Spirit Award at the PPIE Run for Education award ceremonies on race day- April 13, 2014 Theoretically, a school could have more than 100% participation rate since we are taking the number of participants associated with a school (students, parents, other family members, etc....) divided by the total students.  When registering, participants are asked if they are associated with a school.

Parvin Ahmadi,

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 Want a Free Race Entry?
If you have ever thought about running a 5k or Half Marathon or if you want your kids to burn off some excess energy in the Kids Challenge, join us on for the Pleasanton Run for Education with the proceeds benefiting PPIE (Pleasanton Partnership in Education).
Take a picture with either the PPIE Banner (above the Pleasanton Arch on Main Street) or a PPIE Sign (in front of one of our schools) in the background. Then, post it on the Run for Education Facebook site and share with your friends.
The picture with the most LIKES on our Facebook site byMarch  22 will receive a FREE ENTRY to the race.
The PPIE Banner will hang under the Pleasanton Arch from Mon, March 10 - Sun, March 16. You don't have much time so get out early and start sharing.
March Madness at the Grove
In true Walnut Grove Spirit, 120 fourth and 5th graders signed up to participate in the Grove's first annual 3 on 3 double elimination basketball tournament.  Games are played at lunch with our own students refereeing and score keeping.  A big thank you to Mr. Muniz and Mrs. Hilton for providing supervision at the games.  As we move into the quarter finals and semi-finals next week, the excitement is building.   I must commend the students for their overall play and sportsmanship.  All are invited to stop by and experience March Madness at the Grove.
SCIENCE FAIR- A HUGE SUCCESS!
Over 130 Science Fair projects were on display this past Tuesday.  Thank you to SooJin Hwang and her team of volunteers who set up, interviewed and cleaned up the MP room.  This year's event was a fantastic display of science knowledge.
PPIE
2nd Annual Pleasanton Run for Education-open for registration!
APRIL 13 !
You don't want to wait to register - we are working on a new course and have a bunch of fun new things to share with you!  Head on over to PPIERun.com to register now!  PPIE receives 100% of the proceeds from this community event!
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We've got spirit, yes we do!

We've got spirit, how 'bout you?

Help us celebrate Pleasanton schools by hosting a Cheer Station. Gather teachers, classmates and your principal to join the fun.

We'll assign you a spot on the race course to meet-up and make some noise. Your group is encouraged to make signs, dress in school spirt colors, bring noisemakers and most of all cheer on runners to the finish line.

Pleasanton Run for Education is Sunday, April 13th at 7:00 a.m. and starts and finishes at The Alameda County Fairgrounds. Cheer Stations will be assigned on a first come first served, basis.

Are you part of an organization? This is a great opportunity for scout troops, leadership groups and anyone who likes to make a lot of noise. Please email janetgrell@comcast.net for more information.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 Want a Free Race Entry?
If you have ever thought about running a 5k or Half Marathon or if you want your kids to burn off some excess energy in the Kids Challenge, join us on for the Pleasanton Run for Education with the proceeds benefiting PPIE (Pleasanton Partnership in Education).
Take a picture with either the PPIE Banner (above the Pleasanton Arch on Main Street) or a PPIE Sign (in front of one of our schools) in the background. Then, post it on the Run for Education Facebook site and share with your friends.
The picture with the most LIKES on our Facebook site byMarch  22 will receive a FREE ENTRY to the race.
The PPIE Banner will hang under the Pleasanton Arch from Mon, March 10 - Sun, March 16. You don't have much time so get out early and start sharing.
Parvin Ahmadi,
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It was a good week last week as we added 133 new runners with 91% of those linked to our schools.  We are approaching 500 runners and are hoping for 2,000 runners---which is more than last year

Walnut Grove extended their lead by adding 29 new runners. While this early lead is impressive, the race is still completely open with 6 weeks remaining.  Alisal, Vintage Hills,  & Hearst added quite a few participants.

From Mr. Maher
Congratulations are in order to the staff, parents and students of Walnut Grove.  I just received notice Walnut Grove Elementary has been nominated for a California Distinguished School Award for the school year 2013-2014.

I am keenly aware of the distractions that have fallen on Walnut Grove, however, this nomination affirms a distinguished learning environment is being put forth by a dedicated staff, supportive parents and bright and engaged students.

Great Job Walnut Grove!

2nd Annual Pleasanton Run for Education-open for registration!

APRIL 13 !

You don't want to wait to register - we are working on a new course and have a bunch of fun new things to share with you!  Head on over to PPIERun.com to register now!  PPIE receives 100% of the proceeds from this community event!

From Superintendent Parvin Ahmadi

 I Challenge you!!

In 61 days, the second annual PPIE Pleasanton Run for Education will start at the Alameda County Fairgrounds and run through this beautiful city of ours.

I offer up a request and a challenge.  Let's raise the awareness of this run and increase our participation even more so than the 1,800 runners we had last year.   My challenge to each of you is to get the word out and get people registered.  The school who has the highest participation rate (as a percentage of students) will be given the Spirit Award at the PPIE Run for Educationaward ceremonies on race day- April 13, 2014Theoretically, a school could have more than 100% participation rate since we are taking the number of participants asssociated with a school (students, parents, other family members, etc....) divided by the total students.  When registering, participants are asked if they are associated with a school.

SPIRIT DAYS

With the school year well under way, it's time to kick off spirit days! The new spirit-wear has arrived and it's great to see so many already sporting their spirit. Mark your calendars for the last Friday of every month to wear your gear. The class that has the most spirit will be rewarded with a special little treat on the following Monday. Don't have any spirit-wear? No worries. We still have plenty of vintage t-shirts for only $5, or you can wear a green or gold shirt. Any way you can, we would love to see those colors. GO ROADRUNNERS!
