November 2013 - Remebrance Sunday; "Lest We Forget."
The Squadron took to the streets in the parade to pay their respects, to the brave fallen soldiers that have passed in all conflicts past and present.
As usual Wetherby came to a standstill, while the wreaths were laid upon the cenotaph. Silence took to the air as the two minutes passed by. The cadets stood still, their heads lowered with sorrow, pride and honour in their hearts.
As they marched through the streets, the crowds gathered and applauded, with all the cadets making an immaculate appearance.
They headed up towards St. James' Church for the service and ended the day with a smile on their faces and warmth in their minds as the sun shined throughout the day.
September 2013 - Thar be treasure
Cadets to to the streets for the chance hunt down some clues hidden amongst the blue plaques around the town. Mixing skills of radio comms, map reading, reading coordinates and navigation added to a little smidgen of local history, the cadets did a good job of completing the clues to retrieve the chocolate prize.
September 2013 -Doctor, doctor...
Many thanks to our local GP Dr. Kate Langridge who came to the squadron to give some advice on keeping healthy.
Among the many subjects covered were how to get treatment and what for, confidentiality, knowing your body and when it's not happy as well as all the embarrassing bits about checking yourself.
A final set of searching questions and answers completed the night.
August 2013 - Ready for Flight
In August the theme for the month was air planning. Cadets were taught how to use aviation charts and how to plan a flight.
Using their new found skills they were then set the task of planning a flight around Yorkshire, not so easy with plenty of army ranges, space radar stations and major airports.
June 2013 - Drax Powerstation
"This generator supplies enough power for every Leeds postcode including all outlying towns and villages...and we have six of them".
The tour was extremely professionally led and our thanks go to Drax Power Ltd for their hospitality.
March 2013 - Dismantling a Typhoon Fighter Jet
Predictably, no one would lend us a fighter jet so the next best things were devices that were very similar to the jet's technology.
Cadets dismantled and learned about propulsion via a vacuum cleaner, cockpit displays via a flat screen TV, hydraulics via a pressure washer and laser systems a DVD player.
Photos can be found here and we extend our thanks to BrightIdeas, Wetherby for their help.
January 2013 - Squadron Text Service Launches
It can be difficult to keep in touch when plans change at the last minute and not everyone is able to get to our website. That's why we have launched our text message service. Cadets and parents can opt into the service at any time to receive updates from staff on changing plans, reminders and short updates. It's easy to use and free of charge to receive texts.
To join in, email us for instructions on email@example.com. It takes seconds to join and you can leave at any time.
The service has been implemented in-house and is minimal cost to the squadron. Enquires to Plt Off Thomas.
Jan 2013 - Wing and a Chair
Not content with all that he is now planning his trip with injured veterans to Antarctica.
January 2013 - Inside Your Mind!
Cadets were part of a Derren Brown style exercise when they were offered a "personal" profile based on a doodle they supplied before Christmas. In fact, the profile was a set-text based on the things that make all of us ponder. The aim of the exercise was to help cadets become more confident, deal with difficult situations more easily and resolve to do and try new things this year as well as tackle the things that hold us back.
December 2012 - Party Hearty
November 2012 - Remembrance Sunday
Remembrance Sunday was marked with another large parade in Wetherby and Wetherby Air Cadets were proud to take a leading role.
The squadron proudly turned out a full squad in immaculate uniform to remember those who gave their tomorrow for our today.
Standard bearer Flt Sgt Jackson, alogside Sgt Sampson (pictured) lead the parade to the War memorial at the bridgefoot.
See more pictures from the occasion in our gallery.
October 2012 - Drugs Awareness
Platform Leeds for their drugs awareness session at the squadron in October.
The session was professionally run to alert cadets to the facts about drugs, which we think is better coming from trained professionals than from a 'mate' or dealer.
The session covered the full spectrum of legal and illegal drugs, including alcohol and cigarettes, their health effects and the wide range of names they go under. Cadets had the chance to try on 'beer goggles' and a mind bending spinning top to simulate halucinagenics. Cadet feedback on the session is available here.
September 2012 - Awards Night
Congratulations to cadets who received awards at the Squadron Awards Evening, held last week. With honoured guests of Wetherby Mayor, Cllr Alan Lamb, Lieutenant Colenal Black, Wing Commander Wiggins (OC Central and East Yorkshire Wing) and many more distinguished guests, prizes were awarded for excellence across the range of activities. More photos and details will be available shortly on the gallery pages.
September 2012 - Helicopter Night
The much anticipated helipcopter night took off to a flying start last week. With four concurrent activities going on, all helicopter themed, the squadon was abuzz with activity. Every group got the chance to try their hand at model flying, Taketombo flying, simulator flying and learning all about the NOTAR system and helicopter design. With all this applied knowledge on board, the final quiz was a doddle. Congratulations to Team 1 who narrowly won the competition and to some excellent cadets who showed their potential in rotary wing flying.
September 2012 - Thinking Time
With going back to school, it was a great time to get the grey matter exercised.
Several tough moral and ethical dilemmas were posed to cadets in a structured exercise across the evening.
Despite the questions being difficult to answer, the cadets rose to the challenge giving mature and insightful points of view. Well done all.
August 2012 - Fieldcraft Camp
In August 2012, the squadron held a fieldcraft camp near Wetherby. Despite the lightening and thunder the weather just about held out and the cadets enjoyed living and working in the field; sleeping in improvised bivvy shelters they made themselves and eating 24 hour ration packs.
The final exercise, stalking back into the camp unseen and unheard, combined all the skills learned throughout the weekend. Well done to all the cadets, especially two who had never camped before. Check out the many photos in the gallery.
June 2012 - Shedding light on traffic...light.
Cadets had the opportunity to view the hundreds of CCTV cameras and see how a city like Leeds is kept from grinding to a halt. See our gallery for pictures.
June 2012 - Olympic Torch Relay
Plt Off Thomas said, "It was an amazing experience and a huge honour to take part in this incredible event and fantastic to be recognised as being part of such a brilliant organisation."
May 2012 - Fieldcraft Starts
The first fieldcraft lesson of the new season took place this week. Cooking in the Field was well received. Cadets had the chance to sample the delicious 24hour ration pack with all it's nutritional goodness.
Meatballs, chicken and dumplings and chocolate pudding were on the menu as well as the famous teeth shattering "biscuits brown" which proved slightly less popular.
More lessons from the newly revised curriculum will follow throughout the summer and an overnight expedition is planned, a chance to try those "biscuits brown" again when more hungry.
April 2012 - Visit to WY Police Operations Centre
Cadets enjoyed a great visit to the West Yorkshire Police Operational Support Centre this week, having the chance to look at the horses and the helicopter.
As an extra surprise, the helicopter was scrambled right in front of us, so we had the rare opportunity to see a take off.
The squadron sends its thanks to the volunteer guides, staff and officers of West Yorkshire Police for their time and excellent explanations.
March 2012 - Coffee Morning
Thanks to all cadets and staff who attended the Royal British Legion coffee morning on the 17th March to raise funds for the Sqn & the British Legion. Tea, coffee and Bacon butties were the order of the day. It was great to meet several new potential cadets and watch them enjoy the flight simulator.
January 2012 - New Year: New Stuff
Welcome to 2012. The new training programme has been loaded into the calendar and it's better than ever.
We have visits lined up to the BBC, West Yorkshire Police HQ, an aircraft factory, amazing aircraft collections, RAF Menwith Hill and Leeds CCTV and Traffic Management Centre.
We have new activities this year like debating and finance and we will be repeating highlights from last year like the treasure hunt, sports, climbing and radio comms.
First aid now includes defibrillators and a new casualty simulation exercise.
March 2011 - BTEC in Aviation Studies
The Wing are inviting cadets to apply for a BTEC Certificate in Aviation Studies.
Equivalent to two GCSEs at A-C and closely following the Air Cadet syllabus, it's an ideal way to get formal recognition of your academic studies on the squadron. See the OC for more details. The subjects required for the BTEC are contained in the First Class and Leading classifications
Part of the largest uniformed youth organisation in the UK, Wetherby Air Cadets meets Mondays and Thursdays at our own dedicated building in the heart of Wetherby, West Yorkshire.
Learn more about our forthcoming training programme in the calendar and see what we have done so far in the gallery.
