UNIFORM & GEAR RETURN!!

The end of the season is approaching. We understand that some skiers may want to hang onto their uniforms and loaner skis to participate in events such as the Tour of Anchorage or the Oosik or to just ski over spring break. Skiers competing at State will obviously also need to hang onto their uniforms a bit longer. Hence, there will be several opportunities to return uniforms and loaner skis:
Saturday, February 17th – Either return them to Mary Allen (Mimi & Ina’s mom) at Kincaid or back in the ski room, when the buses return to West. Uniforms can be returned dirty on this day only.  Loaner skis can also be returned back in the ski room.

Tuesday, Feb 27th--At the end of season banquet. Uniforms must be returned clean on this day. (When washing uniforms, please LINE DRY.)

Tuesday, March 20th at 2 PM – After Spring Break – In the West Ski Room – Uniforms must be returned clean on this day.  (When washing uniforms, please line dry.)  Also, this will be the last opportunity for skiers to remove their personal gear from the ski room at the end of the season.

CLARIFICATION ABOUT HOSTED PARTIES
AND FUNDRAISING DURING BANQUET

There have been some questions about what to expect regarding fundraising during the Banquet. I hope this explanation helps clarify any confusion:

On the 27th of February, we will all gather in the cafeteria at West for the Ski Awards Banquet gathering - an event that is first and foremost for the kids to enjoy each other's company and celebrate their successes.

The evening will include the following:
Awards
Recognition of each skier (this is done from the skiers to the skiers - they are sweet, silly awards given to every kid individually).
Potluck meal (and usually some pizzas also)
Fundraising (just a little bit with no pressure to spend a lot of money): This is a time when we are all together, so we also do a small amount of fundraising that night. In past years this has included a silent auction. NOTE: THIS YEAR WE ARE NOT HOLDING A SILENT AUCTION! We have done so well with this fundraiser over the last few years, the Booster Club decided we didn't need to hold it again this year. Instead, there will be a few ways you may contribute to the cause that night if you wish to do so:
Some families have offered to host parent parties at their homes, and you can purchase a spot at one of them. These are fun gatherings where the host families provide some sort of meal/drinks/fun. The party dates, descriptions and costs per person (so far) are listed below. During the night of the end of season potluck, you will be able to sign up for these parties. The costs will range from $10 to $75+ per person.
Purchase orange SKHOOP skirts (we received them at a discount so this is a fundraiser for us, and a bargain for you!)
Just give a cash donation.
There might be a pair of skis or some other large item available as a door prize or heads or tails or something along those lines. This will be a surprise!

Here are the current parties that are being offered as part of the fundraising effort (if you wish to be a host, please contact Jen Gordon at jengordonmom@gmail.com or call her at 907-240-0206):

Wine, Cheese and Charcuterie from Around the World
Co-hosts: Kelin and Stig Colberg; Anne Wilkas and Matt Jones
Place: Wilkas/Jones home in Rogers Park
Date: Spring 2018 (date to be determined by Ski Awards Banquet)
Limit: 12 revelers
Donation: $75
Description: The Colbergs go deep into their cheese and charcuterie cave while the Wilkas/Joneses go deep into their wine cellar to offer you a fun, tasty and educational (well, the education may diminish as the evening wears on . . .) evening of sampling of some of the world’s finest vittle and vino.

4-Course Italian Feast
Hosts: Deb Bonito and Mark Begich
Place: Bonito/Begich home
Date: TBD by Banquet
Limit: 10
Donation: $75 per person
Description: Sit down Italian seafood feast.

Cinco (Quatro) de Mayo Party
Co-hosts: Wendy Gellert and Karen Compton
Place: Compton Home - 1811 Westchester Circle
Date: Friday, May 4, 2018
Limit: Unlimited!
Donation: $25
Mexican food, beer and gallons of house-made margaritas!

Taco Extravaganza - Tres Amigos Tacos by Pat and Mara
Hosts: Mara and Pat Carnahan
Place: Carnahan home--232 E. 10th Ave
Date: Saturday, March 24th. 5:30 PM (aprés ski for some of us)
Limit: 30
Donation: $25
Have you ever tasted those amazing Tres Amigos tacos at the State Fair? Go to this party, and you get to experience them before summer. Join us for a casual meal of fish tacos, Jamaican jerk chicken tacos and Cuban black beans and rice. Also Mara's famous chocolate cookies. All ages welcome, this is a family-friendly gathering.

Pia's Classic is Sunday, January 28th. The West Ski Team provides volunteers at the aid station for this race. We need 4 skiers that can help out from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM on Sunday. To sign up, please send an email to Nancy Martin at nancysimpsonmartin@gmail.com and include your cell number.

Hoodies will also be available!

Themed Parties to be Auctioned Off!
Ski team parents volunteer to host a party at their home, and hosts predetermine the date, number of attendees and amount of donation to attend per person. It can be fancy and limited attendance or it can be open and wild! Brunch, dinner, cocktails, whatever makes you tick. During a break at the ski banquet, the sign up sheets will open only until the parties are full. It only takes about five minutes and generates a healthy amount of funds for our skiers. It's an opportunity to get together with some other friends or family and have a fun night or day out.

So far tentative themed parties in the works include:
- a Cinco de Mayo party by the Comptons and Gellerts
- a wine and cheese party by the Wilkas Jones and Colberg Families
- a taco feed at the Carnahan casa

So, start talking with your friends about going together to a party and get motivated to be there early and sign up! Help us build a feeling of camaraderie and social connection among ski team families. If you are interested in hosting a party to be auctioned off at the end of the year banquet, please contact Jen Gordon at 907-240-0206 or jengordonmom@gmail.com.

Monday's practice is canceled as most of the coaches will be out at US National Championships all day on Monday. We will resume normal practice on Tuesday with a classic ski at Kincaid. The ski room will not be open after school on Monday.

After school on Monday you should all come out to Kincaid to cheer on your teammates racing in the classic sprint. The junior quarterfinals will begin at 2:45 starting in the stadium.

If you would like to come out to watch the mass start classic races tomorrow (Sunday) the schedule is as follows:
10:00 Women's 20k
11:30 Mens 30k
1:30 Junior Female 5k
2:00 Junior Male 10k

Our next West race is the Chugiak Classic, which will most likely be moved to Hillside or Kincaid depending on conditions.

Important Lynx Loppet Updates!!!!!!!1!!!

posted Dec 7, 2017, 5:26 PM by Anson Moxness   [ updated Dec 7, 2017, 5:28 PM ]

Here’s the plan everyone! Please read all of this, this is in place of our pre-race meeting today.

Friday

Assuming school is still on, you will all meet Charlie and Karina in the ski room after 2nd hour and grab classic gear and head out to the races. Make sure you look at the start list in the ski room or posted up at Kincaid for your bib number and start time. Also take a look at the course map and preview the course if you can. I have attached course maps and start list to this post.

Coaches and volunteers will be waxing your skis down in the stadium by the big orange tent. Please bring down your skis 2 to 2.5 hours before your start time to get kick wax.  Our goal is for you to have ski ready to go try 45 minutes before your start, but if we get backed up, don’t stress, we’ll get it done! There won’t be a lot of places for you to test kick wax, but we’ll do your best.

If you are able to wax at home I would suggest a warm wax with a hardener if you have it. Swix CH8 with a cold powder, CH7 if you don’t have cold powder, or a Toko Red would work too. Also if you are able to clean skis at home, that would help us out. If you can’t do one or both of those things, don’t worry about it.

Remember to get a good warm up in. That may mean bringing some running shoes and going for a jog on the multiuse trail to get your body moving.

Friday night spaghetti feed will be at Ryann’s house: 2727 Illiamna Dr at 6pm

Hosts will provide pasta and sauce. Please bring a dish to share based on your last name:
Desserts: A-G
Drinks: H-K
Salads: L-O
Breads: P-Z

Theme TBA

If there is no school on Friday we will not race on Friday. Details for Saturday would be to be announced later.

Saturday

Saturday’s race is a pursuit start for many of the team. The races will be split into Girls and Boys A and Girls and Boys B. Everyone from B-F teams will be combined into one sheet and the top 100 of those will race in the B races. A team will have their own race and aren’t counted in that 100. The pursuit start means that your start time is your time behind the winner from Friday’s race. For example if you finish 1 minute 52 seconds behind the winner on Friday, first place from Friday will start at time 0:00 and you will start at time 1:52. It all goes fast so just have your head up as people are starting.

For those in the top 100 or who didn’t race Friday, there will be a community race at around 1:45. It is super fun, and with enough encouragement you might get some coaches to race too.

Race starts for Saturday will be

11:00 B Girls

11:45 B Boys

12:30 A Girls

1:15 A Boys

1:45 Community Race

Awards after

Buses for Saturday:

9:00 Departure B Boys and Girls

10:00 Departure A Girls and Boys and Community Racers

Please arrive 15-20 minutes early so we can depart on time.
