CT ODYSSEY OF THE MIND STATE TOURNAMENT
West Elementary School had three teams participate in the Connecticut Odyssey of the Mind state tournament on Saturday, April 2, 2016 in Bristol, CT. This is an unprecedented number of Odyssey teams that have competed from West.
4th Grade Team: NCW Champs
Problem #5: Furs, Fins, Feathers, & Friends
The NCW Champs placed 2nd in their division of 11 teams, and they have been asked to attend the 2016 Odyssey of the Mind World Finals in Iowa in May! This is a tremendous showing as this team persevered and demonstrated incredible progress from last year.
3rd Grade Team: Intelligent Squirrels
Problem #5: Furs, Fins, Feathers, & Friends
The Intelligent Squirrels placed 8th in their division of 11 teams.
3rd Grade Team: The Awesome Transformers
Problem #1: No-Cycle Recycle
The Awesome Transformers placed 15th in their division of 19 teams.
Congratulations to all of the teams for their Odyssey competition! We are thrilled to have this great program back at West! It was amazing to see the creativity, teamwork and intellectual growth over the course of the year!
Sonia Schott also noted that New Canaan had 15 teams participate in the CT state competition - the most teams of any district in CT! Go RAMS!
A HUGE thank you to the West coaches for leading these teams! These parents worked tirelessly for months organizing, inspiring, and preparing these children for the Odyssey Competition. We truly applaud their efforts!
"The New Canaan Board of Education is pleased to be the bridge between our community and our school system. Pursuant to Connecticut state law and our By-Laws, we are the municipal body within New Canaan which governs public education in our Town. For General Information about the BOE, click here to visit our website."
The next BOE meeting will be Monday June 6th, 7:00 PM at NCHS's Wagner Room.
The conversations on Education Cost Sharing (ECS) continued in Hartford last week, and they finally decided how to distribute the reduced ECS funding statewide. New Canaan's funding is only 55% of the originally budgeted amount for FY17, totaling $678,845. This equates to an $816,758 reduction. Furthermore, we should anticipate a phasing-out of this funding in the future as Connecticut continues searching for ways to balance its budget. While 55% is better than the governor's proposed 0%, it still results in a sizeable decrease. Please continue to stay informed and advocate on this issue.
Meetings of the Board are live on Cablevision channel 78 at 7:30pm and rebroadcast on Thursdays at 7:30pm and Mondays at 4:00pm.

4TH GRADERS - VISITING AUTHOR CHRISTINE PAKKALA
On Tuesday May 17th, West School's Fourth Grade welcomed award winning Visiting Author Christine Pakkala for a writer's workshop. Fourth graders were asked to read her novel Jasmine and Maddie, a story of two middle school students who initially don't like one another but eventually overcome misunderstandings to find friendship. During the workshop students focused primarily on the four elements of a story: character, action, setting and dialogue. Students were asked to write about a time when they felt misunderstood and then write the same scene again from the perspective of the other person. Students were eager to write and share their different perspectives with Ms. Pakkala and their peers. Students learned how to assemble the structure of a story, how to use their imagination and empathy to understand another person's perspective, and how to consider giving others a second chance. Ms. Pakkala pointed out the most important thing in a scene is the emotion. She noted that a great thing about writing is that you can always stop and come back to it. A big thank you to Visiting Author Co-Chairs Geri Mohr and Suzanne Messina, our 4th grade teachers, and to our West school librarian Gloria Koster. Many thanks to the PTC for making our 2015-2016 Author Visit program so successful. Questions? Email Visiting Author co-chairs at firstname.lastname@example.org.
