The PTC needs parent volunteers throughout the year to keep our programs running smoothly. We hope all parents will find an opportunity to get involved. Click here to learn more about volunteer opportunities and to sign up!
If you have a rising West 3rd or 4th grader who may be interested in participating as part of an Odyssey of the Mind team for the 2016 - 2017 school year, please contact Kimberly Birmingham, Co-VP Programs, for more information at email@example.com. In your e-mail to Kimberly, please kindly include your child's full name, current grade, teacher and email address. Thank you!
We are keeping track of all the interested students. Each team can have 5-7 students. If you are interested in having your child participate in the program, please consider volunteering to be a coach.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 4TH GRADE ODYSSEY OF THE MIND TEAM!
In early April, the "NCW Champs" placed 2nd in their division and because of that win, they were invited to participate in the World Finals! Over Memorial Day weekend, Elizabeth Doak, Rani Joshi, Elizabeth McLaughlin, Ava Pertusiello, and Charlotte Walter* had an incredible experience traveling to Iowa and competing at World Finals! It was amazing for them to meet children their own age from all over the world (an elementary school from Poland won their division!). It was an honor for them to represent their state, their town, and - of course - West School! Overall, the team placed 38th out of approximately 70 teams, a great first time performance at the World Finals!!
A HUGE thank you to all the parents who supported this team's endeavors! A round of applause goes to Coach Christa Joshi for leading this team over the course of the year and thank you to Dawn Doak and Lori McLaughlin for chaperoning the team in Iowa.
* NCW Champs team member Adrian McMahon was unable to attend the World Finals.
"The New Canaan Board of Education is pleased to be the bridge between our community and our school system. Pursuant to Connecticut state law and our By-Laws, we are the municipal body within New Canaan which governs public education in our Town. For General Information about the BOE, click here to visit our website."
The next BOE meeting will be Monday, July 18th, 7:00 PM at NCHS's Wagner Room.
The conversations on Education Cost Sharing (ECS) continued in Hartford a few weeks ago, and they finally decided how to distribute the reduced ECS funding statewide. New Canaan's funding is only 55% of the originally budgeted amount for FY17, totaling $678,845. This equates to an $816,758 reduction. Furthermore, we should anticipate a phasing-out of this funding in the future as Connecticut continues searching for ways to balance its budget. While 55% is better than the governor's proposed 0%, it still results in a sizeable decrease. Please continue to stay informed and advocate on this issue.
Meetings of the Board are live on Cablevision channel 78 at 7:30pm and rebroadcast on Thursdays at 7:30pm and Mondays at 4:00pm.
