West Elementary School had three teams participate in the Connecticut Odyssey of the Mind state tournament on Saturday, April 2, 2016 in Bristol, CT. This is an unprecedented number of Odyssey teams that have competed from West.

4th Grade Team: NCW Champs
Problem #5: Furs, Fins, Feathers, & Friends
The NCW Champs placed 2nd in their division of 11 teams, and they have been asked to attend the 2016 Odyssey of the Mind World Finals in Iowa in May! This is a tremendous showing as this team persevered and demonstrated incredible progress from last year.

3rd Grade Team: Intelligent Squirrels
Problem #5: Furs, Fins, Feathers, & Friends
The Intelligent Squirrels placed 8th in their division of 11 teams.

3rd Grade Team: The Awesome Transformers
Problem #1: No-Cycle Recycle
The Awesome Transformers placed 15th in their division of 19 teams.

Congratulations to all of the teams for their Odyssey competition! We are thrilled to have this great program back at West! It was amazing to see the creativity, teamwork and intellectual growth over the course of the year!

Sonia Schott also noted that New Canaan had 15 teams participate in the CT state competition - the most teams of any district in CT! Go RAMS!

A HUGE thank you to the West coaches for leading these teams! These parents worked tirelessly for months organizing, inspiring, and preparing these children for the Odyssey Competition. We truly applaud their efforts!

If you have an upcoming 3rd or 4th grader who may be interested in participating as part of an Odyssey of the Mind team for the 2016 - 2017 school year, please contact Kimberly Birmingham, VP Programs, for more information at kth330@me.com. On Wednesday April 6th, West School students welcomed author and illustrator Peter Catalanotto. Library lessons prepared students for his visit, and students remained attentive and enthusiastic during his presentations throughout the day. Mr. Catalanotto shared with students how he is initially inspired by an idea and walked them through writing a draft story called a "dummy."  He encouraged students to stay focused on the idea of the story and said that it is okay to make mistakes because a "dummy" is a work in progress. He drew on an easel to show how his character illustrations are developed.  He draws basic shapes which can be enhanced later and applies simple pencil techniques to help show a character's movement on the still pages of a story. Many thanks to the PTC for making our Author Visit program so successful. Questions? Email author@westschoolptc.org.

A big thank you to Visiting Author Co-Chairs Geri Mohr and Suzanne Messina, and to the library team Gloria Koster and Mary Poccia. Thank you also to Maureen Karr for capturing so many wonderful photos!
