About Us

The WEST SALEM ADULT JAZZ BAND was formed early in 1993 by a few West Salem HS alumni band members.  The band was to serve as a warm-up for the February ’94 appearance of the Maynard Ferguson Band.  Even though many of the members hadn’t played for 15 years they, re-learned the joy of making and sharing music now as adults.
The band performs 8 to 10 times a year.  They have performed at area festivals and charity benefits such as June Dairy Days, Cancer Society events, the Great River Jazz Festival, the Wisconsin State Music Conference, and Oktoberfest.  Selections range from big band classics to more recent pop stylings, from ballads to dance tunes, from Latin to Swing, and vocal features to production numbers.
The band is rehearsed by trumpeter Rick Young. Mr. Young is a retired music educator who was a band director for West Salem and La Crosse Central High Schools. The members are from a variety of backgrounds and occupations and includes some former students, retired and active educators, as well as other amateur musicians.
