Season Start - first American Tennis Tournament - this Saturday!

posted Apr 18, 2017, 2:03 AM by Emil Berthelsen

Hello everyone,

The first American doubles tournament of the season takes place next Saturday (22nd April) at 2pm. If you haven’t played yet this season then it’s a good way to get started.

Many of you will have played before, but if this is likely to be your first such tournament I’d encourage you to come along. It’s good fun and open to all standards. The format means that you are partnered with a different person in each round so it’s a good opportunity to meet other players. It’s an event for adults to play in rather than children. There is no entry fee – but instead we ask that if possible you bring along a plate of food to share (sandwiches, cake, biscuits, fruit, crisps…or something else) so that we can have refreshments during the afternoon.

So hope you can come along this Saturday – the event is open to all adults (they don’t have to be members) so feel free to invite any friends who might be interested to come along.

Best Wishes,

Susan Scott

WLTC Secretary

Tweeddale Tennis Junior Championships 2016

posted Apr 18, 2017, 1:59 AM by Emil Berthelsen

As Andy Murray achieved his well-deserved number one ranking in world tennis in Paris, the second Tweeddale Tennis Junior Championships took place in superb sunshine with arctic chills at West Linton Tennis Club. With 24 entrants from across all four clubs in the Tweeddale area (Broughton, Innerleithen, Peebles and West Linton), spectators were treated to some very fine and competitive tennis with displays of great sportsmanship and skill. The winners and runner up across the seven categories were:

·         8&U mixed: Louis Kirkpatrick (winner, Peebles), Jack Davie (runner-up, West Linton)

·         10&U girls: Hannah Begg (winner, West Linton), Jennifer Scott (runner-up, West Linton)

·         14&U girls: Zara Elliot (winner, Peebles), Leah Kane (runner-up, Peebles)

·         18&U girls: Zara Elliot (winner, Peebles), Kirsten Rodwell (runner-up, West Linton)

·         10&U boys: Louis Kirkpatrick (winner, Peebles), Thomas Elliot (runner-up, Peebles)

·         14&U boys: Adam Clunie (winner, West Linton), Max Blundell (runner-up, West Linton)

·         18&U boys: Sean Berthelsen (winner, West Linton), Max Blundell (runner-up, West Linton)

Huge thanks go to all the players, parents, guardians, and volunteers who helped organise and run the day, and to Stuart Brown, Regional Development Manager (East) of Tennis Scotland for coming to visit the club during the weekend matches; Neil Clunie, Junior Convener at West Linton Tennis Club for all the pictures; and Guy Frater of Trophy Guy at Galashiels for always being ready with our trophies!

WLTC Newsletter 2016

posted Apr 17, 2017, 1:01 PM by Emil Berthelsen   [ updated Apr 18, 2017, 2:07 AM ]

We closed 2015 receiving successful responses to our funding applications to Sportscotland and BSLT for the club’s all court floodlighting project. Hopefully by the time you read this newsletter, we will have hosted (or at least planned) a ‘lights on’ evening, and will now be offering members the chance to play up to 10 p.m.

Also, thanks to everyone who made it possible for the committee to modernise and update our constitution at the end of 2015 – not an easy task to get so many involved but once again, the club showed a committed and active membership. A copy of the new constitution is in the clubhouse for all to read.

And finally, a huge thanks as always to all volunteers and members who keep this a vibrant and exciting club to be part of. Keep an eye out for Kids tennis in 2016.

Men's Tennis Ladder

posted Jul 8, 2015, 3:55 AM by Emil Berthelsen

The first twelve players have now signed up for the start of the WLTC tennis ladder, and drawn completely at random, these were the starting positions (see attachment). After a few rounds, we should start to see some major changes on the ladder (probably the highest position I'll ever have so I am enjoying this very brief moment), and all I can do is but encourage you to play as many matches as you feel like/want to!
To keep it simple, I would look to only schedule and play one match at a time, and again, could I encourage everyone to take a quick picture of the ladder after a match has been played and it has been adjusted, noting time and date - just so we have a constant record.
The ladder remains open to anyone who wants to join except from now on, they start at the bottom of the ladder! No need to get in touch, just fill in one of the cards on the ladder. Loads of spaces for more players!!!
Remember, aim for the top position by the end of October! A prize at the Xmas dinner awaits the winner!
Please refer to the rules if in doubt (first to seven games wins the match), and remember, when challenged, a player has to play within three weeks or concede his place.
Have fun everyone! Tennis ladder will be up in the club house later this week.

Social Mixed Doubles 2015

posted Jul 8, 2015, 3:54 AM by Emil Berthelsen

Please find attached all the details about the 2015 Social Mixed Doubles competition. With eighteen pairs, and a new consolation draw included, well, this should see us through the summer and autumn with loads of tennis on the courts. The draw is substantial and if anyone has any questions, please get in touch.
The consolation draw means that if you lose your first match in the tournament, and only your first match, then you are entered into the consolation draw with a chance of winning an equally prestigious consolation prize!
There are recommended timeframes for the first few rounds but the sooner you play your matches, the better. Please don't wait, and get that match played - it will not go away, and with so many teams playing, running this smoothly will be key.
Everyone, enjoy, and if you have any questions, please get in touch. See you on the courts.
If I have included a wrong email address or if you prefer another contact number, please get in touch.
Finally, please do not forget to collect your entry fees with the first matches and forward them to either Nicola or Emil - the funds will be donated to the Marie Curie Charity in memory of Steve Bishop.

Friendly Parent-Junior Tennis Day 2014

posted Sep 6, 2014, 3:53 PM by Emil Berthelsen   [ updated Sep 6, 2014, 3:56 PM ]

With a good number of entries for the Tennis Day, and spirits running high, events kicked off with many well-humoured and close matches being played on all three courts. After the initial round, each team entered into a second round against their equally positioned opponents from the other groups, and after some long matches, the overall winners on points were:
Winners: Alex Young & Emil Berthelsen
Runners-up: Adam Clunie & Sean Berthelsen
3rd place: Drummond Begg & Nicola Berthelsen
As results came in, the competition started to highlight a certain family name and all I can say is that Alex made the right choice of partners !!!
Thank you to everyone who took part, to all the spectators who came to watch (and were eventually convinced to join in some post-event matches) and to all those who brought the great cakes and snacks - almost all of it finished on the day!
Some pictures taken and kindly provided by Neil Clunie have been added to the Gallery.

Friendly Parent-Junior Tennis Day

Something different – how about playing as a "parent/junior" doubles’ team? Any combination of parent (or grandparent) and junior will do – and while family-oriented, the child doesn’t necessarily have to be your own!

This fun and sociable event encourages juniors and 'parents' to team up for some fun yet somewhat challenging matches on the courts! For more information, please see the attached flyer! But don't forget to get your entry in by the 28th of August!

WLTC Junior Championships 2014

For the third year running, West  Linton Tennis Club will be hosting its Junior Championships on the 23rd and 24th of August, and it would be great to see as many of our eager and skilled junior tennis players on the courts! Who knows, we may have a budding Andy Murray or Heather Watson in the making! While the championships are 'competitive,' we would encourage junior players at all levels to take part - so many times, we have seen amazing matches from those who thought they were hardly beginners!
To enter, please make sure you have registered by the 21st of August (as draws and finalised times for the matches will have to be sent out), and please make sure that entrants are eligible for the appropriate age groups (see dates of birth and players age 11+ may enter any of the older competitions as well). Please see the attached flyers.  Any queries, please get in touch.
