Ruth Garland (Manager and Proprietor)

During my early years B A hons degree I was asked to do an assignment on reflective practice. This has lead me to question quite why I do the job I do. Above all else I love children, I get enjoyment from sharing my knowledge and exploring the world with them. In 1990 my grandmother helped me to begin my career and assisted me to find a nanny job in London. I then went to London Montessori school and completed my Nursery foundation teaching Diploma and my NNEB ( Nursery Nurse). From there and after several nanny jobs and a Nursery Nurse position in a hospital I moved to California. There I worked as a baby nurse for 5 years and at a forest school for children with ADHD. Returning to Devon in 2000 I began here at west hill working with both my mother and grandmother. I also worked part time in residential care with children and alongside social services. When my grandmother retired at age 81 I took up manager position here. I under took several other diplomas, NVQs and Degrees. This had helped me to assess what is high quality care and strive to deliver it. I have taken what I believe  is good practice from many areas I have studied, so here at West hill we combine a combination of Montessori methods, forest school approach, steinor as well as researching pioneers and delivering the Early Years Curriculum.
