As a non-profit organization, the Westchester Area Math Circle relies heavily on high school students who volunteer as workshop instructors and team coaches. We have been very lucky to work with a group of talented and dedicated high school students who volunteer their free time as workshop instructors or middle school coaches. Their hard work allows our students to learn advanced math topics, prepare for math competitions, and enjoy math alongside other mathletes.
This year, we would like to again honor high school seniors who have made an outstanding and long term contribution to WAMC. Please join us in congratulating Chen Lei and Warren Fu on receiving the WAMC Community Service and Leadership Award.
Chen Lei
Chen joined our instructor team as a high school freshman in fall 2022. The first two years Chen volunteered as the instructor of our Introductory Problem-Solving Workshop, which is dedicated to preparation for middle school competitions, such as AMC 8 and MATHCOUNTS. Last fall, he started teaching our online Intermediate Problem Solving Workshop while providing support to two new instructors of the Introductory Workshop. This year, he is the lead instructor of the Intermediate Workshop.
Throughout the years, Chen has been responsible not only for delivering each lecture, but also for preparing all the required material and communicating with the students and their parents. He has proven to be a talented, dedicated, and hardworking instructor with a remarkable ability to meet students at their level and approach problems from multiple angles. He was able to excel in teaching both in person and online and proved to be able to handle two very different environments with ease.
Chen has also represented our math circle in HMMT, CMIMC, MMATHS, PUMaC, and ARML. He excelled in individual math competitions and qualified for USAMO in the last AMC cycle. Chen is scheduled to coach our middle school Purple Comet teams in spring 2026, and we are sure he will do an outstanding job.
Warren Fu
Warren started volunteering for WAMC in summer 2022 when he joined Grace Lin as an instructor of our Summer Workshop, an online program dedicated to preparing students for AMC 8 and MATHCOUNTS. He continued teaching this workshop for the next three summers. In 2023, he became the lead instructor mentoring first time instructors.
Warren has not only taught the lessons but also modified and expanded the lesson material to support students who attend the workshop for two or more consecutive summers. Warren is an outstanding instructor who can navigate online teaching with an ease and can present each session as a standalone topic that is accessible to students who might not have been able to attend previous sessions, a common occurrence in our summer program.
Warren has also represented Westchester Area Math Circle in ARML and Purple Comet. Besides teaching for WAMC, Warren works as an instructor for LIVE, a program run by Po-Shen Loh. He is also one of the developers and contributors to MSMG, a website that provides free resources for middle school math competitions.
