West Elgin Secondary School turns 60!
With less than ONE WEEK left, West Elgin Secondary School is gearing up for its 60th Anniversary with a 2-day Reunion event, planned for May 18th & 19th, 2012.
West Elgin District High School opened at its present site in West Lorne in 1952. With a number of additions and renovations over the years, the name was changed to West Elgin Secondary School (WESS) in 1971.
Members of the reunion committee congratulate the many local businesses, both local municipalities, and a number of alumni, who have been extremely generous in sponsoring the event, or donating items. Some of the silent auction or raffle items include beautiful artwork, signed collector items from local sports celebrities, a hand-crafted quilt, theatre & sports tickets, and lots of great gift certificates. Proceeds from the event will be donated to WESS for use in their Athletic, Music and Art programs.
Friday evening, May 18th the reunion kicks off with an open house
at the school, from 7-9PM. This evening is open to any members of the community that would like to tour through WESS or listen to the entertainment or make a bid on a silent aiction item. Refreshments will be served throughout the evening in the Coffee House set up in the Cafetorium; you will be entertained by local musicians there as well. The silent auction and raffle items will be displayed and available for bidding. Come out and check out the changes in some of the classrooms, view school memorabilia, and renew friendships with your classmates. There is no fee for the open house, but attendees will be registered at the door.
Saturday evening May 19th will begin with a social hour at 5PM, then a 6PM dinner at the West Elgin Arena, catered by The Wayside Inn. There will be more opportunity for silent auction bidding at the arena. Dancing and reminiscing with old friends will be to the music of entertainers Floyd, Joanne, Wayne, Bruce & Neil Bobier, and Brad James and their band Back Pages, as well as other tunes from the last 60 years. The silent auction winners will be announced later in the evening. Door prizes will also be presented throughout the evening.
Registrations are coming in steadily with tickets at $30 for the full weekend being available until May 13th.. If there are unsold tickets
available, entry to the dance may be purchased at the door,
beginning at 8PM. Registration forms are available at many local
businesses, through the committee Treasurer, Joan Miller at
