DISCIPLINE MATTER

Dear Members,

Following reports from race organisers we have had cause to discipline two competitors following their breach of the rules pertaining to the carrying of safety kit.

1. Cader Idris, Sat 18th May. It was reported that a competitor ran with kit; but handed it to spectator on the return leg at Ty Nant. We recognise that the high mountain section had been completed, but there was still a clear requirement to possess kit throughout the race.

Upon being challenged on the issue the individual accepted the breach and apologised.

The runner concerned has been issued a formal warning.

2. Ras y Moelwyn, Sat 25th May. It was reported that a competitor ran the full race without kit.

Upon being challenged on the issue the individual fully accepted the breach and apologised.

The runner has been banned from competing in WFRA registered races for 2 calendar months. Organisers of races taking place during that period will be notified of the runner’s name.

Unfortunately, there is also a third case pending which took place around the same time at the Preseli Ultrabeast. Having one case to deal with is disappointing, but three in as many weeks is particularly so.

The WFRA takes competitor safety seriously. Runners are reminded that you have a responsibility to yourselves, and we will support race organisers in every case where breaches are reported.

Remember - always take your kit with you; and comply with the requirements of the organiser of that race

Regards,

Chairman,

WFRA.

DISCIPLINE MATTER

Dear Members,

Following the running of Ras y Aran (AM, 10 miles/3100') on Sat 30th March, it was reported that a competitor deliberately competed without safety kit despite plenty of notice that it was required.

Aran Fawddwy is a notoriously unpredictable mountain with weather that can catch out the hardiest fellrunner.

After fellow competitors reported this to the organiser he was disqualified and informed that he would be reported to the WFRA. His immediate response was to apologise and accepted that his was a poor decision and agreed with the disqualification.

After consideration of the facts the WFRA committee have unanimously agreed that the individual should be banned from competing in WFRA registered races for a period of 2 months. It was also agreed that given his contrite response if the individual concerned agreed to marshal for a race his ban would be reduced by a month (which he has agreed to do).

The competitor concerned has therefore been banned from competing for the month of April. Organisers of races during this period have been informed for details.

The WFRA take competitor safety seriously, and we fully support race organisers in minimising the risk to them, and also other competitors who might need to give over their kit to a fellow competitor who haven't got theirs.

Remember - always take your kit with you, and comply with the requirements of the organiser of that race.

Regards,

Chairman,

WFRA.

Mynd Dragon - 28th April CANCELLED

After talks with the National Trust the RO has decided to cancel the Mynd Dragon Fell Race which was due to be held on 28th April. This is due both to both being restricted to certain areas and the paperwork being increased to disproportionate levels for a race with no more than 50 in it.
