Keiro no hi 敬老の日

posted Sep 15, 2014, 7:11 PM by Kurt Pipa   [ updated Sep 16, 2014, 6:50 PM ]

Did you know that among countries, the Japanese live longer than any where else in the world? Wonder why? Some say it's because of the food. Others say it's community. I have my own theories (I lived five years in a prefecture consistently ranked highest in longevity in Japan).

With so many elders, it's a good thing Japan takes such good care of them. Keiro no hi is dedicated to this. Read about Keiro no hi here.

Christmas in Japan

posted Dec 27, 2012, 7:07 AM by Kurt Pipa   [ updated Dec 27, 2012, 7:09 AM ]

Although Christmas  is not a holiday in Japan, it is still on the radar of many as something to celebrate. Young couples might spend a romantic Christmas Eve together and exchange gifts; children in households that celebrate the holiday might wake up with one present at their bedside.

Capitalizing on (1) the Japanese propensity to celebrate things and (2) the fact that turkeys are hard to come by, Kentucky Fried Chicken has successfully campaigned to make chicken a regular part of the Christmas Eve dinner. Check out this video (supposedly part of a documentary on KFC in Japan) which shows the line outside of a KFC in a certain city. You can hear a Japanese Christmas song and even the bearded KFC mascot speaking Japanese.

For extra credit at the start of next semester, try to listen and see if you can tell how long the wait is outside KFC....

いい ふゆやすみ を!
Happy Holidays!

Japanese Dinner on Fri 11/2

posted Oct 31, 2012, 1:02 PM by Kurt Pipa

Do you like Japanese food? You think you know all about Japanese food? You wanna show off your chopstick prowess? Then put your miso where your mouth is and koi!

All Japanese language students are invited to the Japanese dinner that the Japanese exchange students (Amy, Ayumi, Terue and Yumi) are making this coming Friday in the Faculty Parlors (in Main).

The dinner should start at around 5:30 or so.

Important: Please contact prof Pipa via email and tell him whether you can, can't or might make it.

  • You can receive extra credit for up to 2 extra individual sessions per period.
We are now in the second period, so if you do three sessions you'll get extra credit for two of them.
Three or more sessions will improve your Japanese and help you achieve better grades
(but no extra credit points  awarded for the third or subsequent sessions during any period).
  • Each extra credit session is worth up to half the amount of points (5 pts) of a regular session (10 pts).
Keep in mind that sessions are graded, so you get the full amount of possible points only if you prepare and perform well during the session.
