A group of Isle of Wight residents have proposed the building of a tunnel starting in Titchfield and emerging just east of Arreton in the centre of the island.

The plans, which include an Isle of Wight monorail network, can be seen on a specially created website A government e-petition has also been set up in favour of the tunnel.

The aerial images on the schemes website omit to show any indication of proposed road or rail links. (The image to the right is our own interpretation of where the tunnel would emerge)

The proposer have issued a statement: "The website shows a potential plan that may be realistic or, perhaps, another plan would be better?

"But it is a plan and as engineers were consulted beforehand, it is feasible.

"It has been produced with no expense apart from lots of time taken to provide information as we see it. We believe this design gives opportunities to Islanders to improve their lifestyle and business possibilities and reduce traffic congestion and vehicular use.

"In order for an economy to grow, communication and fast transport is imperative."

Nick Girdler chairman of Titchfield Village Trust commented on the TVT Facebook page: "The so called tunnel developers are of course unaware of its proximity to the grade 1 listed Tithe Barn.

"They just show a small blob on their aerial photo failing to include the new road links required.

"I have no doubt that this is a dead in the water proposal, as I’ve said the IOW fixed link is a regular media fest every so often and has failed to come to fruition for over 150 years."
