Kashid

Kashid is a beach town on the shores of Arabian Sea, in the North Konkan region of Maharashtra, India. It is located 30km from Alibaug, 135km from Mumbai & 160 KM from Pune (via Khopoli) on the Alibag-Murud road.

Kashid is popular mainly because of its white sand, blue seas, green mountains, paddy fields, and rivulets. Kashid has a 3 km stretch of beach tucked in between two rocky hillocks with Casuarina groves all around the seashore. This is by far the best beach in this part of the Konkan region and though absolutely deserted on weekdays, the town can attract its fair share of week-end holiday makers. There are a few of small hotels in Kashid as the rest of the area is privately owned.

How to Reach?

For Mumbaikars, the route to Kashid is an extension of the drive from Alibag. Many might have crossed Kashid on way to Murud-Jinjira from Alibag. Take the Panvel-Pen NH17 route to Vadkal naka, bypass Alibag town and head straight towards Revadanda Bridge. At the Revadanda Police post, meet the SH60 from Pune. However the crowd traveling to Murud-Jinjira directly from Mumbai might have missed Kashid if taken the alternate route on Goa Highway via Kolad, Roha and a left diversion just beyond Roha town through SH 92.

Alibag – Kashid : 37 Kms Kashid – Murud-Janjira : 15 Kms Roha – Murud (SH92) : 48 Kms

Puneites, eager to use the Express Highway to the maximum, generally take a longer route via Pune-Lonavala-Khopoli–Pen–Vadakhal Naka. Other route is via Mulshi-Tamhini Ghat. After crossing the Tamhini Ghats on SH60 always keep an eye on the Kolad milestone and head towards the Goa Highway. Be careful not to take the Mangaon detour near Vile. Once you reach the Goa Highway T-section, turn right and head a KM to a left turn towards Roha at Kolad. This is the only break in stretch of SH60. From Roha, religiously follow SH60 again till you reach the Revadanda Bridge.

Milestones from Pune (Kothrud, Paud Road) :

  • Paud (25) – Junction near Vile (87) – Goa Highway,NH17 (108) – Left turn at Kolad (109) – Roha (122) – Vikram Ispat, Salav (156) – Police Post, Revadanda (157) – Kashid (170)

Murud - Janjira Fort (15 KMs)

This overwhelming guardian of the Siddi naval prowess over the Arabian sea, can be approached in sail boats, which leave from Rajpuri jetty, 5 kms from Murud. Battered on all four sides by sea waves, its strong walls yet standing intact and 40 feet high even at full tide is the majestic island fortress of the Siddis -- Murud-Janjira. Never conquered by an enemy for over 350 years since its construction by the Ahmednagar rulers under the supervision of their regent Malik Ambar in the 15th century, Murud-Janjira is probably the only impregnable fort on the 720 km Maharashtra coastline. Neither the Portuguese nor the British could subjugate the fort. And the Marathas, despite their repeated attempts failed to subjugate the Siddi power.

There is a lot to see on the fort. As we land at the front gate of the fort, two formidable bastions. can be seen guarding the huge gate. Here is a sculpture in stone depicting a Lion that has overpowered six elephants. The main gate is followed by another gate where 3 lungers/anchors are clearly visible in front of shrine of 5 Peers(peerpanchayatan). Opposite of that is a big sweet water tank. Around that stand Khasha Siddi Masjid and ruins of houses. Next comes Surul Khan's mansion(wada). In the backyard, remnants of Hindu sculptures are visible. During archaeological excavations in 1985, temple ruins and a 'Shivaling' was found. On the background, fortified bulwarks with guns positioned, are unmistakable. There are 24 bastions in all, having their separate names. Special attraction of this fort is 3 Gigantic Cannons named Kalalbangdi, Chavri and Landa Kasam. Another gate to the west is sea- facing, called 'Darya Darwaza'. There are guides available who tour you through the fort while giving you an interesting version of the forts history.
