Patterson, James I Funny: A Middle School Story Jamie Grimm is a middle schooler on a mission: he wants to become the world's greatest standup comedian--even if he doesn't have a lot to laugh about these days. He's new in town and stuck living with his aunt, uncle, and their evil son Stevie, a bully who doesn't let Jamie's wheelchair stop him from messing with Jamie as much as possible. But Jamie doesn't let his situation get him down. When his Uncle Frankie mentions a contest called The Planet's Funniest Kid Comic, Jamie knows he has to enter. But are the judges only rewarding him out of pity because of his wheelchair, like Stevie suggests? Will Jamie ever share the secret of his troubled past instead of hiding behind his comedy act?
Lowry, Lois The Giver Jonas, who is 11, is apprehensive about the upcoming Ceremony where he will be assigned his job or his "assignment in the community." In his society, little privacy is allowed; even private houses have two-way intercoms which can be used to listen in for infractions of the rules. However, the rules appear to be readily accepted by all, including Jonas. So it is without real protest that he initially accepts his selection as the Receiver of Memories, a job he is told will be filled with pain and the training for which will isolate him from his family and friends forever.
McMann, Susan The Unwanteds There are three groups to be selected to at the Purge at the age of thirteen every year, Wanteds, Necessaries and Unwanteds. On this day the Unwanteds are sent off to be killed. When they reach the great lake of boiling oil, they think their time is done. Instead of death the Unwanteds find themselves in the magical Artimé where they learn magic and secrets that will change everything they've ever known.
Palacio, R.J. Wonder "Wonder" by R. J. Palacio tells the story of ten-year-old August. The boy was born with a face that horrifies most who look upon it.
