About Me

I am Brad Hughes, a professional aritist residing in the beautiful town of Homer, Alaska on Kachemak Bay. This little piece of Heaven is located in the rugged glacier country of South Central Alaska. One of the worlds most beatiful spots and home of the famous Homer Spit.

I have been here over 35 years and virtually all my professional work has been done  during this time. I am self- educated and though I've  always done art in some form it wasn't until I moved here that I started to study in earnest. I learned the basics of drawing, color and design and expressed myself in paintings, pastels, drawings, prints and sculpture.

I started out in the early 70's doing signs and Graphic Art and continue to do this as part of my overall career. At this time I also started a long stint as the official artist for the Alaska State Fair and did displays , souvinier art and Alaska State Fair Posters Soon I was having "clothesline" art shows on the Spit Boardwalks and selling to tourists and locals alike.

My Fine Art began appearing in local galleries and in the early 80's I got my first major solo exhibition at the Pratt Musuem in Homer. Many of the paintings on the fine art pages are from that show.

I also have been involved in designing and painting theater sets for over 40 shows around the State of  Alaska during these years.

When my wife , Judy Hughes, became interested in the Red Hat Society we began  making  collectible dolls and have an entire site  dedicated to those.

You know I dont' like to brag or anything but look over there and you will see me posing with absolutely the worlds biggest King Salmon. I caught this mammoth thing with Bea. S. Charters off the Homer Spit. Man what a day!!!  If you don't believe me click on the link below the picture.

Above is one of the many examples of my  Business Signs  that show up in Homer.

While commerical art has enabled me to pay my bills and learn valuable lessons in color, painting and design my great love has always been oil painting and in that medium I have expressed my love for the great beauty of Alaska and its' creatures.  I have also let my imagination run a little wild in the department of magical creatures such as Angels, Fairies, Mermaids, Dragons and Knights. As to originals just click Original Fantasy Paintings and see some of these oils and pastels In 2004 I began to discover the wonderful possibilities of working in the new Giclee print medium. For the first time an artist can exert total control over the image and use the computer to enhance and assure that the finish product will reflect the beauty of the original. I have been very fortunate in working with local computer guru and print master Mike Hiller. Together we have been able to produce some work I am very proud to offer for sale. You can see this work and get more information by clicking the Alaskan Fine Art Prints page or the Fantasy Art Prints page or theSea Otters page

When not working on art prints and computers Mike can be found all summer cooking his gourmet creations at the Spit-Fire Grille on the end of the Homer Spit.
This poster was created using one of my Model Airplanes and some photo shop techniques. I have always loved making models so I have included them on this site.
