Outreach: Near & Far

Overview of our 2011 Summer Mission Program

Abundant Hope

June 24 – June 30, 2011

For  I was hungry and you fed me . . .

Schedule of Activities

A Hearts @ Home Mission Program of Waverly Presbyterian Church

Focus:  This 7-day program offered participants of all ages the opportunity to help their neighbors in need, grow in their understanding of the extent of hunger in our neighborhood, region, country, and world, raise awareness, and advocate for change.

Ninety-three individuals participated in this program that included the following five components:

  1. Action: we offered hands-on service opportunities with local agencies addressing the issue of hunger and those they serve.  These agencies included Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, EECM, G-Tech, and House of Manna.
  2. Education: Programming for children, youth, and adults highlighting the root causes of hunger and current efforts to address this need.  This programming included the use of special readings and outside speakers from the Greater Pittsburgh Community Foodbank, Southwestern Pennsylvania Food Security Program, Bread for the World, and Just Harvest.
  3. Spiritual Reflection and Worship: Central to the purpose of this program was our need to reflect on what it is that God calls us to do in the face of ever present need.  This program included opening and closing worship services and daily devotions.
  4. Awareness: participants had an opportunity to heighten the awareness of those around us of the hunger-related issues that our neighbors face.
  5. Advocacy: we learned how we can begin to effectively advocate for change.

Surrounded by many distinct neighborhoods, Waverly Presbyterian Church is a congregation that embraces both the community and world. One of our central focuses is outreach. In doing so, we enjoy connecting with our neighbors across the street and those across the globe.  Our outreach includes projects and activities throughout each year and a major project each summer.  Our major projects, which rotate on a three-year basis, include: a youth mission trip, a local mission project involving all ages, and an adult trip.
