The research group developed a black box recording system using low-cost accelerometers to be used on sea-vessels to record its movements in different sea conditions. This system was conceptualized from previous work by undergraduate and graduate students of the Ateneo de Manila University; mainly from the research of MC. Marimon under the guidance of Nathaniel Libatique, Ph.D. and Gregory Tangonan, Ph.D., the group’s advisors.

Low-cost hardware were used for wave monitoring of buoys and sea-vessels, maximum acceleration averaging as being equivalent to maximal wave height averaging, and threshold counting for processing, compression and efficient cost effective telemetry.

This thesis project initiated the design, development, prototype and field testing of a black box recorder system. All major concepts were implemented with a low-cost, simple hardware and software package. It was all then tested in various touristic sea routes all over the Philippines.

The research group consists of the following members:

  • Guillaume Giradot

  • Antonio Garcia Recio

  • Jesse Jan Abiada Caparangca

  • Jaime Luis Honrado

Under the advisement of:

  • Dr. Nathaniel Libatique, Ph.D

  • Dr. Gregory Tangonan, Ph. D
