Turakina Cluny Farm

Cluny Farm in the Turakina Valley has hosted WATRC events since April 2009, when it was added as an end of season venue after the 2008/2009 championships. Attended that year by a small group, it got enthusiastic reviews and was added to our regular calendar in the 2009/2010 season.

The course has been tuned a little each year but retains the same overall design, consisting of a small forest loop and a larger farm loop. Both loops have a climb of about 100m, and the farm loop is a little more rolling, so the total climb is probably closer to 300m over the two loops. Of course, if you're in the longer distance classes, you do it twice. So, although not our toughest course on the calendar, it's still quite testing.

Much of the course is over paddocks and bulldozed trails, but some is on farm access tracks with stones or loose metal, so care is required. There are two river crossings on the farm loop and the organisers maintain a careful watch on weather conditions in the days preceeding the event, as the river is prone to flash floods following heavy rain in the headwaters. The river crossings proved to be the venue's weak point in 2012 when the ride had to be moved to another venue after flooding made the fords impassable.
