The story continues...  Know some other interesting facts about family relations in Hungarian waterpolo.

Each waterpolo nation has something interesting in their waterpolo history. And I'm sure each country has „player generations” of their own. It’s the same with Hungary as well. Interesting family ties give extra values to the waterpolo tradition here in Hungary.

1. Szivos family:

3 generation of waterpolo players with unique skills. The grandfather, Istvan Szivos was two time Olympic Champion (Helsinki, 1952; Melbourne, 1956) and he was the member of the National Team for 17 years. His son, Istvan Szivos Junior, participated on four Olympic Games, won one gold (Montreal, 1976), silver (Munchen, 1972), and bronze medal (Moscow, 1980). And the grandson, Marton Szivos, member of Hungarian Men Waterpolo Team, now trains for his first Olympic Games. The interesting thing is that both his father and grandfather played center post in their team, but Marton rather plays right wing (although he is also effective in center post as well, if you can't believe it... see it: NZL-HUN game, Melbourne 2007).

2. Kasas family:

Zoltan Kasas and Tamas Kasas... father and son and they’re also very look-alike. The father, Zoltan won silver Olympic medal in 1972 (Munchen), and was a World Champion in 1973. He was coach of the Hungarian team „Vasas” and also worked in Greece („Olympiakos Pireus”). Since 1997 he is the right-hand of Denes Kemeny in the Hungarian Men Waterpolo Team. His son, Tamas, is a unique player in the Hungarian Waterpolo History – he has won everything that’s available in waterpolo (Olympics, World Championship, European Championship, World Cup etc.), except one: he hasn’t won any Hungarian Championship…so far. Tamas is a classic all-around player and he has been playing in Italy for a couple of years now. One interesting data: Zoltan was a left-hand player, but Tamas is a right-hand player.

TO BE CONTINUED

3. Steinmetz family:

Janos Steinmetz (father), Barnabas Steinmetz and Adam Steinmetz (sons). Janos was a first class goalkeeper in the National Team, and won European Championships (1977) and an Olympic Bronze (1968). And he saw both his son win an Olympic gold: Barnabas (2000, 2004) and Adam (2004). The two brothers now play together in the Hungarian club “Vasas”. Barnabas also played together with Kasas in Italy (Posillipo). Adam is known as one of the best and toughest center in Hungary. Their father experienced what only few can: both his sons won Olympic gold in Athenes. It's a shame he couldn't see their further progress as this year a family tragic happened: Janos Steinmetz suddenly passed away on the same day when his two sons were about to play their first Quarter Final game against Jug Dubrovnik in the Euro League. Barna and Adam scored 3 goals each, and “Vasas” won. And they also accomplished what their father wanted most... they became Hungarian Champions together in 2007.

 4. Varga brothers:
4 brothers… each waterpolo players, but only two made it in club and national team levels: Daniel and Denes. They’re both main players of the Club “Vasas”. Daniel, the oldest one, is a classic all-around player. In 2006 he was invited to Tom Hoad Cup and gained the MVP title. His brother, Denes, is one of the most talented young players in Hungary. He has everything that Hungarian waterpolo is: cheeky, unpredictable, and full of improvisation. According to experts: he has a unique leg technique that cannot be learnt. Since 2006 both Varga boys are the member of the National Team and their main desire is to stand on top of the podium.

 5. Kemeny family:
Ferenc Kemeny (father/grandfather), Denes Kemeny (his son, and father of 3 boys). Ferenc Kemeny (known as “Fecso ba’” in waterpolo society) was a goalkeeper, and now he is the Director of National Youth Team and won numerous medals with them. He has detected many talented players (including one of his favorites Tamas Kasas). Denes Kemeny is the coach of the National Team over 10 years now. He has won everything that’s available in waterpolo (internationally), but only as a coach. In his active player years, he was a center, but never made it to an international tournament as the member of the National Team. Before returning to Hungary in 1997, he was a coach in Italy (Como). And the Kemeny-boys: Kristof, Viktor and Mark. The two teenage boys, Kristof and Viktor play waterpolo. Kristof is the oldest and he already made his mark in the National League. Viktor is about to move on the same track as his father: he plays waterpolo and would like to be a veterinarian. And the youngest, Mark, well he’s only one-year old… so we will see. And who knows what family ties might offer in the future. As most of the Olympic Champions are now fathers, Hungary may have another generation of unique waterpolo players… like father, like son… or like father, like daughter.

SERBIA WIN THE WORLD LEAGUE
Hungary and Australia get the other medals

Reports by Camillo Cametti
FINA Press Commission Chairman

With both teams already qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games, other important things were sapicat stake: pride, honour and the 100,000 dollars prize money (50,000 for the second). The rivalry between two of the world’s strongest team produced indeed a very exciting final of the FINA World League 2006. A very focused Serbian team showed great determination and managed to outscore its rivals 9-6. The first quarter was a tie (2-2) , then Serbia started to build its success when it crushed Hungary 4-1 in the second quarter. At the end of the 3rd period, that was again for Serbia (2-1) the gap was of 4 goals (8-4 for Serbia). The tardy reaction of the Magyars produced only an ephemeral advantage in the last quarter (2-1 for Hungary) but could not reverse the destiny of the game.
Sapic (SRB) was the best scorer of the game with 3 goals as well the tournament’s best scorer with 20 goals.
Nebojsa Novoselac, assistant coach of the Serbia, said: “It was a great game for us. After the thrills in the semi-final against Germany we upgraded our performance in the final to the best of the tournament. And that although we have sent three of our players to the University Games in Bangkok and the Junior World Championships in Long Beach. The key of the game was our excellent defence. We are happy with the triplet we made in this competition”.
Marton Szivos, Hungary #6, had some regrets: “It seems as if had subscribed the silver medal, this is our third in the latest three years. Of course we are disappointed. We respect the Serbians who earned a hard win bt we want to beat them next year in Beijing”.
The medals and the trophy were awarded by the FINA president Mustapha Larfaoui and by the FINA WPTC chairman and World League director Gianni Lonzi.
