Cheshire Junior Inter-League Competition 2017

Teams have now been selected for the U15 Dave O'Leary Trophy and U19 Thornley Trophy.

Under 19s:
Som Dhulipala, Kieran Tsang, Mehak Singh, Calum Gare, Abi Collins

Under 15s:
Adarsh Kumar, James Maffitt, Sep Bazli, Sriram Subramanian, Anisha Gladston, Vaishnavi Sankar

Results

None of our U15 team had played in this competition before and, despite the step up in standard, they equipped themselves very well. Our first match was against eventual winners, Chester, and we lost 2-6. We then had a cracking 7-1 win over Wirral and finished off with a 4-4 draw, losing the girls doubles 20-21. Match results had us joint 2nd but 3rd overall when games were taken into account.

Our U19 team was again a young one with three of the five players having moved up from last year's U15 team. Depsite a few close games, Chester [eventual winners] proved too strong beating us 0-8. Next up were Wirral; we won the first four games [including a 21-20 win in the mixed] but then Wirral fought back to secure a 4-4 draw. Finally, we played Crewe; there were lots of close games [all bar one game being 17+ to the loser] and so the 4-4 draw was a fair result. Despite securing two draws, we were joint 3rd on match results but 4th when games were taken into account. However, all players are available for selection next year so the future looks promising.

Sam Cooper, Alex Pickering, Isaac Everson, Kieran Tsang, Ella Urwin, Shakiba Bazli

Under 15s:
Callum Hewitt, Calum Gare, Mehakdeep Singh, Adithya Kumar Abi Collins, Christine Erinjeri

Results

Our U15 team included several players that had suffered heavy defeats in previous years. Now older and stronger, they were ready to reverse previous results. Our first match was against eventual winners, Crewe, and we lost 0-8 but the players dusted themselves down and beat Wirral 5-3 and Chester 6-2. In four years, these were our first match wins, an excellent improvement with us coming second.

Our U19 team comprised just two of the players that won the trophy in 2015. This 'ringing the changes' saw several 15-year-olds playing - something for the future. For today, they found it a little difficult standard losing 2-6 to Crewe, 2-6 to Wirral and 3-5 to Chester [we won all three boys singles to be 3-0 up but then failed to snatch another game].

Under 15s:

Results

Our young U15 team found the games quite hard, playing against many strong Performance Centre Players. Good effort put in by all players and matches played in a good spirit. We lost both games 8 - 0 and came 3rd out of 3 teams.

We fielded another strong U19 team, this year with the boost of having the required 2 girls playing. There were many close games [most of which involved Sam]. Alistair won all his singles and, with Isaac, his doubles. Sam showed tremendous stamina in three of his matches winning a decisive doubles with James 21-20 in the 3rd and a magnificent 21-20 in the 3rd against a relentless opponent from Crewe. James and Amy continued their senior league form and were dominant in all their mixed games. Lucy & Amy had a battling performance against Wirral but lost in three – they were dominant against Crewe and won 21-8 21-10.

Our first match was against Wirral. We drew 4-4 on games, 10-10 on sets but were awarded a win on points, 365-362, phew!! every point counted. Our second match was against Crewe; partnerships really gelled and we won 6-2 and were winners overall. An excellent display by all 6 players - everyone played their part in this victory, Warrington's first ever.

Teams have now been selected for the U15 Dave O'Leary Trophy and U19 Thornley Trophy. Players have been selected from junior members of several of our clubs: Bridgewater, David Lloyd, ICI and Vida.

Under 19s:
Conor Hutchinson, Mike Pope, Ben Keen, Alistair Hawgood, Amy Bremner

Under 15s:
Dan Weaver, Tej Pradham, Som Dhulipala, Cameron Naylor, Emma Weaver, Kirtti Sathyanathan

Results

Our young U15 team found many of the games quite hard, playing against many strong Performance Centre Players. Good effort put in by all players and matches  played in a good spirit - Dan won most of his singles. We came 5th out of 5 teams. The winners were East Cheshire PC.

Our U19 team was fairly strong but again we were hampered by being able to find just one girl to play. A nail-biting 15-14 defeat in the last game of the first match meant we lost 4-3 against Crewe. We bounced back to beat Wirral winning 5-2 then suffered a heavy 6-1 defeat to eventual winners East Cheshire PC. The afternoon was rounded off with a 5-2 win over Chestre to secure 3rd place out of 5 teams.

Cheshire Junior Inter-League Competition 2013

The League is pleased that it is entering teams into the U15 Dave O'Leary Trophy and U19 Thornley Trophy which have been revived after a few years' absence. The competition is run by Cheshire County Badminton Association and is being held on Sunday 2nd June in Ellesmere Port. Teams have been selected from junior members of several of our clubs: Bridgewater, David Lloyd, ICI and Vida.

Under 19s:
Ian Hawthornthwaite, Conor Hutchinson, Mike Pope, Alistair Hawgood, Amy Bremner

Under 15s:
Jake Gardener, Isaac Everson, Leon Charnock, Rebecca Davis, Nicole Johnson

Results

The U15 team found it really tough, playing against many county squad players. Good effort put in by all players and matches  played in a good spirit. We came 4th out of 4 teams. The winners were Wirral League.

Our U19 team was fairly strong comprising several county squad players of our own. A 6-2 victory over Crewe set up a deciding match against Wirral. We drew this 4-4 but Wirral won the match, and the competition, on the count-back of games. So, we were runners-up. Considering that we were one girl light of a full team and Wirral were completely staffed by county players, this was an excellent achievement.
