Thanks for another great season

The 2016 season of the Ward 8 Farmer's Market has come to a close.

Between June 4 and October 1 we had:

-18 Saturday markets

-over $15,000 in sales

-over 1,800 customer visits

-more than $12,000 in Produce Plus checks issued

As we reflect on the season that just ended and begin thinking ahead to 2017, we want to know what you liked about the market and where we should focus our energy to make it better.

Congress Heights/MLK Community Garden

In March 2016, the Ward 8 Farmer's Market launched a community gardening program in partnership with Martin Luther King Elementary School and the Congress Heights Recreation Center.

Throughout the Spring, Director Nathan Harrington led MLK students in planting and tending the gardens. Children in grades PK through 5 got to harvest, cooking with, and take home organic vegetables.

During the summer months, children experienced the garden as part of DC Park's and Recreations summer day camp, and this fall, Nicole Lockette welcomed MLK students back to the garden.

Garlic and greens will continue to grow throughout the winter, and we are pursuing grant funding to resume sessions with MLK in Spring 2017.
