In my childhood, I was fascinated in a Chinese traditional game, “MaJiang”, which is a gambling game dates back to 1000 years ago. The porps of Majiang are many wood particles with numbers carved on them. I created a new playing method which had nothing to do with gambling at all. I tried to pile many particles together, making the face with numbers upturned, and observed hidden disciplines in disordered numbers. The reason I like this game is that I believethere is some impetus beneath every phenomenon. I hope one day I can find the impetus and got the power to influence the world to better state, rather than worse.
In the past 10 years, it is the strong desire to find the impetus that propels me to study day and night. Luckily, I found in the university that the influence I need can be get from two things----math and computer. This is why I take part in Mathematic Modeling Contest.
According to me, math is a descriptive language using which you can transform any real problem to a series of definable procedures. In mathematician’s eyes, the world is constructed by several basic axioms iteratively. The ways these axioms are combined are so-called Mathematic Models.
When you review many classic mathematic models, like Newton’s gravitational law and Maxwell’s electromagnetic equations, you will find that many of them are based on agnostic hypothesis. In fact, the real world is too complicate to be modeled linearly and analytically, and nearly all the nonlinear problems are beyond humans’ brain. Fortunately, with the aid of numerical computers, we can model and simulate many nonlinear systems. The basic of computer simulating is linearization by lots of iteration. In the past 50 years, computing power of von neumann machine has been increasing rapidly, enabling us to iterate procedures millions of times. As a result, many nonlinear models are developed to solve real problems, like Neutral Network and Generic Algorithm.
Math helps me to model a real problem to mathematic description, while computer bestow me the power to solve the model. It would be no exaggeration to say that mathematic modeling is the propel impulse of the society.
