What is MathFest?

Your school is invited to attend the 2013 Walton MathFest, an annual mathematics competition for high school students. This year, MathFest will be held on March 30, 2013, at Walton High School in Marietta, Georgia. We hope you will be able to join us for a day of competition and various activities. Also, for the first time, performance at this competition will be a qualifier for the state competition.

We are offering both a Varsity and a Junior Varsity division, and to compete in Junior Varsity a student must be currently taking Accelerated Math II (or its equivalent) or a lower math class. Each team is comprised of four students.

An overview of this year’s MathFest:

1.       Regular written tests for all
This will follow the convention of most math tournaments and comprise of a written test and a team round. The highest scoring individuals and teams will receive rewards at the end of the competition.

2.       The Super Varsity written test

This infamous test is designed to challenge the highest achieving mathematics students in the state. This test will be around the level of the ARML competition, and we suggest only the experienced sign up for this. (To give you an idea, we had only five students take this test last year.) Super Varsity students, for the purposes of calculating a team score, will be considered part of a Varsity team. Their written scores will be scaled to that of the Varsity test so that their individual scores will contribute to the team score, and they will compete with the Varsity team in the team round.

3.       Lectures

After lunch, we encourage teams and sponsors to stay for a lecture given by a guest speaker, and there will be a variety of topics from which to choose. Our goal is to stimulate mathematical interest by presenting interesting topics.

4.       Scavenger Hunt and Estimation Games

We will also offer a mathematically oriented scavenger hunt (which takes place in the halls of the school) and estimation games during and after lunch. Estimation games require good estimating skills, and prizes will be awarded during the awards ceremony.

The cost to attend is $35 per team of 4 individuals if you pre-register by March 16th.  You may enter as many teams per division as you wish.  We also offer the option to pre-order lunch consisting of pizza, drinks, chips and a cookie for $5 per person.
