Help with the WRA Gift Tree!

posted Dec 1, 2010, 9:28 AM by WRA WalterReedAuxiliary   [ updated Dec 17, 2010, 8:07 PM ]

It is that time of year again. The Walter Reed Auxiliary is doing its annual Gift Tree Christmas giving project. We have created two registries - one at Target and one at Amazon. Links are below. You will be able to go directly to the registry and purchase gift cards to help with the Gift Tree.

Here are the registries:

Target

This year I also wanted to incorporate our Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Who are these gifts for? These gifts are for children that are children of wounded soldiers, deployed soldiers and/or are below E6 pay/rank grade.

2. Why do these children need these gifts? Often times soldiers that are stationed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and/or Bethesda Naval Hospital are here on a temporary basis for medical care. The Washington DC metro area is notoriously expensive and making ends meet can often be difficult for parents that are relying on one income (due to the short stay here or the medical attention required by the other spouse). There are often situations where children and spouses come here on short notice due to an injury or illness. Christmas and winter time tend to be the most expensive time of year for families. The Walter Reed Auxiliary decided that this project would help reach this small gap and help these families meet their needs.

3. What does each child get? Often times, the most needed items are winter coats and boots due to the fact that most of these soldiers are typically stationed in warmer regions of the country. Each child gets 3 clothing items that they need (shoes, coat, boots, hats, etc), an age-appropriate book and toy. The toy must encourage education, family interaction or physical movement.

4. What is the process? The gifts arrive and we have created a system on a spreadsheet of each child, their needs and what we put on the registry. It sounds harder than it really is! Last year we developed a numbering system that streamlined the entire process. After we gather all the gifts, we have a wrapping party and the gifts are distributed that following day.

5. Who are these children and how did they apply? The parents had to apply, giving us there financial information, their LES information and other verification information to confirm their eligibility of need.

I hope that answers some of your questions!

I realize you are all getting asked for things at the holiday season. But a simple click to Target/Amazon and a gift card purchase in any amount can be made and we can then purchase the remaining items on the list

Help with the WRAMC gift-giving tree!!

This year the Walter Reed Auxiliary is helping with a gift giving project at Walter Reed Army Medical Center - called The Gift Tree.   240 wish list forms were sent to the children that are associated with various family service programs at Walter Reed, whose parents could use a Gift Tree this year.

We specifically asked them their favorite activities, characters and talents.  The goal is getting gifts that would be something they really need (like pajamas, socks or the like) or gifts that promote physical activity, learning/education and family interaction.
Three gift registries were set up to make it easier for you to decide.  The Target and ToysRUs registries can also be accessed in-store.  Amazon can only be used online.  The final date to submit their lists is November 30th, at which point all the registries will be complete by then.  It is not too early to begin purchasing off of the registries.
If you have any questions/concerns please contact Tracy Hall tracythall1@gmail.com.  For more details, please click here for the flyer!
