Monument Dedication Ceremony,  May 5, 2018


Wallingford 350th Jubilee Descendants Committee commemorated the 100th anniversary of the demise of Major Gervais Raoul Lufbery.  A special military parade and monument dedication ceremony commenced at 11 a.m. at the Wallingford Historical Society,  at 180 South Main Street in Wallingford, Connecticut.


About Major Gervais Raoul Lufbery:

During WWI Major Lufbery was an outstanding military pilot and the highest scoring Ace of the famous Lafayette Escadrille. This flying squadron was made up of 38 American volunteers who fought with French combat forces for nearly two years before the United States officially entered the Great War. He was the first American WWI flying ace, Raoul Lufbery. Major Lufbery is a former resident of Wallingford, Connecticut.

           

About the Procession: Parade 11:00 - 11:06 a.m.

The Governor's The First Company and the Second Company of the Connecticut National Guard led a procession of dignitaries and more than 25 Lufbery family descendants from South Main Street (Town Hall) to the Wallingford Historical Society at 180 South Main Street.


About the Ceremony: 11:06 - a.m. - 11:45 a.m.

The ceremony included scheduled remarks from a welcome from Wallingford Mayor William Dickinson, Emcee Al Terzi, legislators and a Lufbery family descendant. The Lufbery family presented the monument (2’ x 3’ foot bronze tablet)  and a special flag presentation to the Wallingford Historical Society. The VFW Post 591 hosts a reception immediately following the ceremony.

Invitees included National guard members, including General Thaddeus Martin, Town Veterans Organizations: Post 73 American Legion, Post 187 American Legion, Post 9965 VFW, Post 591 VFW Major Raoul Lufbery (host post), Ambassador of France, Governor Malloy, US Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy, Representatives Rosa DeLauro
